I'm looking to (finally) add a flashlight to my AR and would like some recommendations. I've heard good things about Surefire and I've been looking at the M600 Ultra Scout Light. Anyone have experience with it or what else would you recommend instead if not? Also, do you prefer side mounted on picatinny rails, or 45 degree offset mounted from the top using a canted mount?

Preferably under $300, thanks.

>Pic related is the one I've been looking at.

Get a 1" El cheapo ring attachment then get a maglite ultra.

Works well with my setup, save your cash for ammo son.
>>
>>29807867
I have 5k of every caliber I own (not including my other stock specifically for shooting) so I'm not in need of ammo. I have decent optics/furniture/etc., so all I've left to add is a good light. Thanks for the rec though, I might do that on a basic PSA AR I'm building for my friend.

I have the M300 single cell mini scout on my rifle. For my purposes, the 300 lumen mini scout is plenty light for me, and saves some weight vs the M600 2 cell model.

I'll help a nigga out because I'm getting a light for my ar too.

Apparently, a light from Arisaka defense/head from Malkoff Devices is a good cost effective alternative to surefires. Half the cost but not as durable as surefire but durable enough.

you guys are taking into advantage run time right? most of these lights only have a runtime of a couple hours. great for tactical response shit, but not really utilitarian for SHTF purposes
>>
>>29808051
>most of these lights only have a runtime of a couple hours

Because you don't actually keep a weaponlight on for an hour straight. You tap it for a second then move on somewhere else
>>
>>29808071
i know, i just dont like having to factor in being proactive in battery changes. these high lumen lights dont start to fade when the lithium batteries run out, they just immediately power off if theres no more juice. so after a few months of usage, you have to remember to add fresh batteries if you dont want to get caught by surprise with no light
>>
what do you guys think of streamlight TLR1? i know its a pistol light but it mounts to a rail just fine

my x300, x300U and m300, and m300v all fade out.

My surefire weaponlights don't just "turn off." They go to a lower output when battery is low to tell you to replace your CR123s.

I've got an M300 on an AUG, an M600V on a 16S, and an M600P Fury on a 17S and they've all been bomb-proof.

Before I started buying SureFires I had one of the WML's. It was a good deal, but the pressure switch did crap out after about a year. It would turn on but it was jittery and something was clearly off about it.

I would like to try one of the Arisaka Defense lights though, I don't know too terribly much about them. A friend also just got Streamlights new rail mounted Scout clone (I think they're about $100) and he says it's fine but I don't know how much abuse it's gotten as he's only had it a week.

Money no object? Want to be high speed low drag like a delta force operator?? Get a surefire, three hundred dollars for the light plus a few hundred more to effectively attach and use it.

>Preferably under $300

Get a Streamlight ProTac, they make one and two battery versions depending on what you want. Costs a fraction of the Surefire (around 100 shipped), comes with everything you need at under a third of the cost and it is three times brighter, lighter and shorter.

Allegedly the surefire is more water resistant and tougher but are you really going to be using it to insert into a rocky shore from the hull of a submarine at night?

>>29808790
you are. stream lights are inexpensive, effective, and practical. i used a beat up surefire g2x for 3.5 years in iraq and while a lot of dudes shit on it for being old or out of tacticool fashion, it worked well, easy to find parts for if something broke, and it didn't break much at all.

sometimes people put too much value on gucci instead of being a soldier or fighter. same reason i laugh off the guys super pushing keymod or mlok. 1913 rails work great, and idgaf if it's 1lb heavier on my already 14lb carbine, and that extra hassle of using an adapter or whatever isn't worth being nonstandard with everyone else or stuff at the PX. same goes for crazy super slick finishes or hyper expensive muzzle devices.

if you wanna enjoy your money by playing dress up and take pics, go for it, but gtfo that you can even remotely pretend that shit makes you a better fighter.

Parker Mountain Machine does it. You can either buy them outright or send in yours and he refunds you $20. I had him do mine when I sent my barrel in, that's a 14.1" pin to 16" OAL.

I was confused as to why a grandmaster shooter/ ex special forces dude was using a $40 light. I always thought streamlights were around the $100 mark. Good to know I don't need to spend surefire money for a decent light. How is the tape switches on streamlights?

the backing on the one stream light i used was garbage and i just used one of those skateboard tape things to keep it in place. a really goo, if over looked weapon light is the M600 or M951. i used both and i really liked that the 951 (i think...) took AA batteries.

i find more use out of a sub 100 lumen light than the super bright ones, the bright white light washes shit out and reflects too easily while the more yellow light of an incandecent or just a dimmer light worked better at dusk and low light.
>>
>>29808852
Honest question: you were in a war zone and presumably busting into places. You were on the attack and part of a trained team. Do you seriously recommend a weapons light for a civilian in home defense, urban defense, or SHTF? Because the idea of letting the asshole know exactly where I am makes my feet itch.
>>
>>29807781
I use the Surefire X300 Ultra on mine. it's small, sturdy, light weight, clamps down really tight, and it is very bright. You can pick one up for about 200. And because of the size, you could remove it to put it on a handgun if you felt like it.
>>
>>29808938
>I'm also curious if yours was a blem rifle?

It was, I actually have the letter around here somewhere. FN sent a note along with them that says like "We warranty all our guns and this is no exception...except the finish." lol
>>
>>29808950
stop, stop being a retard.
weapon lights or at least a hand held is a must have for hd.
>>
>>29808950

You don't think it's necessary to identify your target at night before you start slapping your trigger? I would like to know if I'm about to shoot Jamal or one of my kids.
>>
>>29808950
more information is better than no information, so yes a light is absolutely recommended. i was 11B prior to 18C (i posted around here a couple times last year, i'm in maritime security now). and door kicking you use violence of action and momentum to keep going and maximize your surprise.

if you're defending turf you're already familiar with, all the light does is give you an option for gathering more information on a target or area where you need more details. otherwise just don't turn it on and navigate normally. you know your house better than some random dude probably.

again, maximize the advantage and dont' deny yourself any options - even if they aren't useful NOW, they might be useful later.
>>
>>29808950
not him, but i think for civilian use it's a bit more important. you are going to be close in home defense ranges, and it's far more important to ID the threat with your light to make sure its not your dumb teenager sneaking back into the house after going out for a party, or a drunk neighbor, landlord, dog, etc. besides it would only take you a split second to ID target after flashing them with a light, by the time they realize whats going on, you are already putting lead into them if they are a badguy. its not like youre going to go around clearing rooms in a HD scenario anyway, unless you are an idiot

I use the Primary Arms Ultimate Weapon Light.

It's big, but it's built like a tank and throws a lot of light a really long way. It also costs a fraction of what a Surefire does.

But I mean, if you hate money, just go ahead and get a Surefire. In the unlikely event SHTF and you fall down a mountain while being pursued by a small army, it will have a 25% greater chance of surviving to its next use, either by you or your enemies.

See that's fucking dumb though - i started using glowsticks on all my guns for this VERY reason

all you idiots with your battery powered devices arent going to mean shit because 100% of the time you need those contraptions THEY WILL FAIL

with a glowstick i can smack it if i hear boom boom crash and KNOW IT WILL WORK 1000% of the time without giving away my position. when i need to idenfity a target I can just thorw the stick at them and that also gives me the benefit of surprise because you bet your ass they're going to try and catch it just as a biological response, you can't help it, and when their arms go up you VENTILATE

BIG flashlight guy here OP, go with Eagletac G or T25C2 or Armytek Predator Pro XP-L HI and according pressure switches and rail mounts. Better runtimes, better UI. Get good 18650 batteries like Panasonic Protected NCR18650Bs and Xtar Charger and you are GTG.

chemlights dont replace a weaponlight. most of the time i used them to read or as a marker when a strobe was inappropriate.

what i dont get is why people are wondering about having a light at all? there are small inexpensive effective lights for your throw (about 25 meters max inside your home maybe?) so not having one just limits your options. just my 2 cents man. door kicking is pretty different from defending a home. and defending a base isn't anything similar either.

Surefire makes great stuff. You can't go wrong with the scout. I would just get the m300; you don't really need to spend the extra money on the m600, the 300 offers plenty of runtime and output as is, and you save a little weight.

If you already have a quad rail, don't bother with an extra mount, just slap it on the side.

Just remember, you are paying a premium for the Surefire name; you can usually find a comparable, brighter light for less, but the construction and quality will be negligibly lower.

If you have the cash though, go for the m300
