What is it about swords that makes them the legendary weapons of heroes? Why don't we see the same with axes and spears?
Best guess is that swords were also a sign of wealth as they were very expensive.

Swords have traditionally been associated with the aristocracy, officers and career soldiers since they are generally more expensive and difficult to craft than axes and spears.
Serfs carry axes and spears, the king carries a sword thus the culture glorifies swords because the rich are the ones who finance plays and art and literature.

Spears were glorified in Greece, Rome, and Norse cultures. Gods would often be depicted holding spears in a triumphant manner. The Macedonians relied heavily on the spear, not just as a front line weapon, but to stave off arrows. Saying that they were the weapons of cowards is not entirely accurate.

In theory, when a Phalanx is in formation only the first line or so have their spears/pikes/sarissas trained on the enemy. the soldiers behind have theirs lifted up sorta creating a screen that can block incoming arrows. sounds good on paper, maybe not so much in practice.
Keep in mind the rule of thumb for spearmen: the longer the spear, the smaller the shield.

Farmers and ill equipped soldiers used axes and other modified farming tools for combat. With a sword you have a tool with the sole purpose for fighting.
