To an extent I agree with you, but that doesn't mean police shouldn't be scrutinised more carefully.
I'm a pretty well off white guy with no criminal record, never been ticketed, not even so much as a parking fine. That said, of my admittedly low number of interactions with police officers, more than half have been negative. No crazy arrests or abuse, but I've come away from the majority of my interactions with police with a lowered opinion and level of trust of the police due to the way they've acted.
The thing is that there are millions of people like me. Even if it is a minority of 'bad apples' in the force, the cumulative effect of millions of people like me losing trust in the force bit by bit over the years is going to result in a deep, deep divide between civilians and police. (As if that isn't already the case).
The way to fix that is increased accountability, transparency, and a renewed focus on community policing.
Do I suggest police should be disarmed? No. I get that cops are facing armed criminals and need the appropriate equipment to deal with them. What I do want to see is dialogue, transparency, and evidence that police are held (and hold themselves) to the same standard as everyone else.
IMO a big part of the problem is the divide between rural and metro policing. Rural cops are often great, and lead by democratically elected officials. Most of the feel good examples of cops doing great work posted by pro police people are of rural deputies—who are more directly accountable to their people. Meanwhile most of the big complaints that hit national news are focused on cops from metropolitan precincts, who incidentally, are lead by politically appointed chiefs.

When a cop shows up anywhere and flashes the badge, he feels entitled to be "in control" even when he has no legal expectation to have it. When this doesn't happen, cops have used (lethal) force to gain control, but doing so puts them at risk even with their body armor and assault rifles.
