I'm trying to lay out my case (pic related) for my AR & mags - currently iron sights. How much space should I leave above the rifle for optics? I'll probably end up getting a red dot & maybe a 1-4x eventually.

OP here - the 36" Plano pluck & pull fits a standard 16" AR perfectly, with space for mags & shit. If you don't like the foam, you can buy a sheet of aftermarket closed cell to put in the middle.
If you absolutely need a hard case, the Plano's the one.
what is the best way to cut that shit?

Seriously though, Woodcrafters carries it and I would like to thank the anon that tipped me off to it. I had been looking absolutely everywhere for replacement grey foam (locally) and it turns out Woodcrafters is the only place that carries it and the type of foam, Kaizen foam, is far superior to what came in the case in the first place. It's relatively cheap too. $25 for like a 2x5 or 4 sheet of a little over 2" thick foam. I'm using it in my tool boxes now too.
