All depends on the scenario, but probably a handgun. Smith & Wesson Model 65 with a 3" barrel would be my choice for this. For daily carry I'd opt for a LCR, but if I can only own one gun that wouldn't be it. 65 would be a good survival pistol, effective caliber, easy to carry, reliable as hell, wide range of ammo, and very little to break on it. I could take it with me everywhere I went, which beats out a long gun. If I went with a long gun, it'd probably be an 870 with a 18.5" barrel, 6+1 tube, synthetic full stock with a saddle holder. Or a good old Ithaca 37 Deerslayer.
