How do you get rust off a machete? Pic related, found it in a home my brother just bought. Seems like the old owner never even bothered to sharpen it and just left it in Its sheath to rust. Tried to clean it up as best I could. Any tips?

Use it, clean it, don't store it where water can get to it. Repeat until broken.

Soak in white vinegar for a day or two. Most of the rust will dissolve and you can then easily scrub any remaining off with a wire brush. Sharpen up and put a light coat of 3 in 1 oil on the blade when not in use or when in storage.

Eh, I mean besides being neglected it doesn't look like too bad of a blade. Stainless steel, full tang machete. Gonna see if I can sharpen it but I honestly have no idea what I'm doing so i think I'll just let a professional do it instead. Says its made in El Salvador
>>
>>29795736
I always spray my machetes and big knives with WD 40 before wiping it down and using the Lansky Puck to clean it up.

No man this is the perfect blade to learn on since you didn't pay anything for it. Get a small sharpening stone and keep a consistent angle, that's all you need to do. No need to hire a professional.

Thanks for the info senpai. Heres the sheath it was in btw
>>
>>29795836
Sharpen it yourself, it's easy and fun. And you literally... well it's really hard to fuck up as big of a blade as it is. Just use a metal file and put a decent blade on it, not too sharp or you'll knock a hole in it next vine you cut. Save your money.

I've never sharpened a knife before haha, the thought of sharpening a machete seems a bit out of my league. Maybe it's good to lear on it though, whats the best tool to use when sharpening a blade thats never been sharpened before?
>>
>>29795828
3 in 1 is literally useless bullshit. WD-40 does a better job.
>>
>>29795940

Machete is easier to sharpen than a knife because you don't need a razor fine edge like a knife. Use this

>>
>>29795940
Get a flat, double-cut metal file. Put the machete in a vise and sharpen both sides evenly.
>>
OP
You need some mineral oil based shit
Try weiman's, it's what I used before I started getting special snowflake shit

Why would you not want a raxor sharp edge on a machete? I'm kind of ignorant on the subject
>>
>>29796016

Because it'll chip or roll when you're cutting through branches. It needs to be sharp but not so sharp that the edge is too delicate for the hard work that these blades are meant for.
>>
>>29796008
Well I mean, it is from El Salvador. Can't really expect them to have aesthetic sheaths

Almost everything you don't know can be found using this website, dumbass:

It's not. Imacasa isn't anything to write home about, but that's largely because everyone has one because they're good and inexpensive.

Machetes can be a great way to get big blades for a relatively cheap price so long as you shop around and learn what makes a good machete.

Pic related is not a good machete. Do not fall for crap like this.

I'm not sure why no one suggested this yet, but to take the rust off use a power sander or a cup brush in a grinder. That's what I use if my machete gets left out accidentally and gets rusty.
>>
>>29795736
OP i had a machete outside for 4 years and it was so blanketed in rust you couldn't see the blade and it was not anywhere close to flat. all I did was take some some sandpaper and i went from 40/80/120/240/400/600/800/2000 grit. it had a patina all over it and still was extremely shiny.
Oil the blade with some 3-in-1 oil and it will keep it from rusting.

Elbow grease OP...Elbow grease.
>>
>>29795972
you're a faggot 3 in 1 is the best and will stay on for months if you don't use the blade and wd-40 is for WATER DISPLACEMENT.

this is the machete it was
Corona makes a good blade, especially if you sharpen it.
>>
>>29795736
WD-40 and a Dremel if needed.

that's not rust, stupid

>>
>>29795972
Wd-40 leaves a nasty residue, he'd be better off using canola oil.
>>
>>29795736
You call that rust OP? Just get a stone and sharpen it. It's better to have a machete that looks like it's been through a couple of jungles and one or two neighborhood hoodlums than a nice shiny one.
