My cat actually did get in a fight with a raccoon once. I was doing yard work when i heard it, ran over and booted the fucker with my steel toes. It was on the porch of my trailer house as I was walking up, it tried to run down the stairs so I charged it and ended up kicking it.
Opossums can fly pretty far, its even better when its dark and they disappear into the darkness 15 feet off the ground.
Its surprising I didn't get rabies since I didn't have shoes on.
Just fucking beat it with a pipe or your favorite beating tool. You can litterly chase possums down and beat them down. It's one of my favorite activities.
