But even than 50 years ago the draft was still a thing in America an many men age 17+ had seen combat or atleast we're trained for it. When you are trapped and know this really is the end.
When you know that if you don't try, someone else will die and you like that "someone" very much - your family, friend, fellow soldier etc.
