The ammo came from the same place as the weapons, the stuff is generally stored together.
There are plenty AKs though they cost more than you might think, but AKs don't outfit your whole army and there are MGs and rocket launchers there for the taking.
All this shit is on use-it-til-it-breaks status with these guys. There are no armorers and no supply chain to stock them even if there were. Look at the way the use their armored vehicles...they just drive the things aimlessly into the breach, it all gets blown up, they build more and do it again.
