Is overkill even a real term in warfare?
This was an annoying sniper, they used a 6 foot missle to end him.

Yes.
While using a missile or small bomb to take out a the sniper in your pic would be considered enough for such a mission, a 2,000lb bomb would be considered a waste of resources.

He was an HVT. If he was killing men or halting a key movement for any longer than deemed acceptable, a missile is a simple way to save time and bodies.

Best I ever seen though, was a 4 door KIA that got smacked with a Hellfire.

Its better to spend ammunition that can be replenished easily than men that can't be replenished as easily. Besides the Russians probably gave them more than enough ammo to replace those that are used up.
The US is dropping even bigger stuff on similar targets when Iraqi or the Kurds ask for it.

probably 3-6 guys max on that hill. But because its a strategic position or is proving to be a pain to attack, they rather spend a few extra dollars than a few extra men.

Sometimes it's not just about the individual. Think of it this way... They could take out the sniper, but the cover remains. If troops move through that area consistently, there wouldn't be much stopping a new sniper from using the same cover. So, the troops took the "fuck you and your cover" approach and collapsed the whole thing in a fireball. Problem solved, problem staying solved.

The only kind of overkill in any situation is nuclear weapons.
It's not overkill.It's being thoroughly humane.
