Smith & Wesson Model 686 Six Shot .357/.38

vs.

Ruger GP100 Six Shot .357/.38

Which would you choose and why?

Forged vs Cast

Break away vs fallout assembly

Push vs detent cylinder release.
>>
Super Blackhawk in .44 mag.
>>
Which one looks better to you? Thats about all there is to it man.

As far as Smiths I like the k-frames better and therefore dgaf about the 686
>>
I have only shot the GP100 out of those two, but I loved it. The S&W is also a classic. I don't think you have a "bad" option so much as choosing which one will be more awesome for you personally.

>Forged vs Cast
Doesn't fucking matter. At all. The GP100 is objectively more durable than the 686 in every way - harder to blow up with retard handloads, harder to make go out of time with extended use.
>>
>>29764495
The GP100 Match Champion model would be more tempting. Or a pre-lock 686. Wouldn't really care for a new production base model of either.
>>
>>29764495
Smith is easier to work on
>>
Shot both at the range, I would spend the extra buckaroo's on the Smith only because the cylinder release is actually in reach of my thumb. On the ruger I could not reach it while holding normally and I don't have short thumbs (3 inchs long from the middle of the knuckle to tip). Other than that it's pretty much the same thing IMO.
>>
Owned both. Sold my ruger. Ymmv. But I like working on the smiths as well as prefer the aftermarket for them. I expect to buy a k frame soon to go with my 686

HILLARY HOLE

Smith is better gun.
Easier to clean, better trigger pull, better finish and frankly I've had and heard of others having issues with cylinders locking do to rapid firing the sp101.

S&W all the way. If also like to see some actual data on cylinder strength rather than just mindless parroting.

Oh, and you can't twirl the cylinder by way of the ejecting rod on a ruger.

>If also like to see some actual data on cylinder strength rather than just mindless parroting.
You think the superior durability of the Ruger is all in the cylinder?

The Glock of the revolver world...
>>
>>29764495
I chose the GP100 because in my opinion it's better than the 686 in almost every way --except exterior finish detailing and name recognition. I'd get the GP and spend the extra $ on some ammo.
>>
I'd go with a Smith unless you just need something you're going to beat the crap out of with really hot stuff. Smith's have a huge aftermarket (not that Ruger has none) and holds their value more. Also, that sweet sweet Smith and Wesson trigger out of the box.
>>
>>29767135
Fuckin' lel

Ruger revolvers can be taken apart with just a coin (to remove the grip screw) and breaks into a few large pieces. Their main selling point when they first came out was how easy they were to maintain and work on compared to S&W.

My GP100 Wiley Clapp is my absolute favorite wheelgun. I love the Novak sights and 3 inch barrel (despite generally preferring longer barrels on revolvers).
I have a Wilson spring in it and I slapped a groove-less Hogue monogrip on it and she shoots like an absolute dream.

Sing along.....The locks on smiths are Gay!!!!!

As yes the budget line of snake revolvers. This what people unknowingly mean when they request the revival of the line
>>
>>29768517
SW triggers suck though

>confirmed that your faggot ass owns neither
>>
Picked up a Dan wesson 14 last week. Its stupid heavy and the cylinder release is odd. Shot a fist size spread at about 20 feet and got kinda depressed before I realised the barrel was loloose. Anybody know how well they hold up to retard handloads?
>>
>>29770290
>>29768517
Ruger improved the trigger about 10 years ago and they are pretty fantastic now. Ive only got about 1k through mine and it breaks like glass in double action. If you dont like the weight, a trigger spring kit is less than 10 bucks.
>>
>>29764495

I will choose the Ruger every time because the S&W has a Hillary hole and idk if it functions flawlessly; I am against it on principle alone.

What is this? Some kind of secondary safety?
>>
Out of the box DA trigger is objectively worse on the smith, though you're going to want to work on either one.

The rest is subjective. I feel the GP100 balances better in my hand while the smith feels front heavy.
>>
>>29771551
its a keyed frame lock

basically you can put a key in it to potato the firearm if you are too dumb to not keep it safely stored around children and morons
>>
I've basically been looking for a modern Detective Special

>compact grip
>6 round
>fixed sights
>DAO

Would the GP100 3" be the best choice?
Would it be possible to blue?

the smith is better, but not ~$300 better.

If you are looking for compact, maybe the SP101 is a better choice

>>
>>29772069
>but are these actually good?
They're brand new, but everything I've read says they've got nice triggers and are very well made - no MIM or anything.
>>
>>29764495
The gp100 is Tonka tuff and will outlast you firing 357 everyday but the 686 has an amaze balls trigger and is much more accurate if you've got your fundementals down good. So really it's a trade off. The better question is what will you use the revolver for.
>>
>>29772270
Down the line the optimal situation would be

>buy revolver
>train with it till spring time
>Join the police academy
>become police
>get approved for revolver

>become the ranger.
>>
>>29772342
It's not the 80s anymore, cops don't carry revolvers. Just get a glockenspiel
>>
>>29771813
It looks cool and has grant cunningham's input for its design which I like but I would hold off to see if there are any teething problems. It's Kimber's first revolver and they had intermittent problems producing quality 1911s which is just silly.
>>
>>29772069
>I was trying to avoid exclusives

Why would you NOT want the kickass Novak sights?? They're not that expensive, and they made a lot more than the 2500 they initially planned.
>>
I was thinking about getting a GP100 but I fingerfucked an SP101 today at Gander and the trigger was I swear to god at least twIce if not three times as heavy as the DA on my SP2022. Like I'm pretty sure a small woman would be physically unable to pull that trigger.

I know it's not the same gun but it reeeeally slowed my interest in the GP100.
>>
>>29771770
Just get the Armscor M206 Detective Special clone.
>>
>>29772416
Yeah they do m80. I have seen a few cops walking around with revolvers. I think forces don't offer them to cops anymore but you can still qualify on a revolver if you bring it yourself.
>>
>>29773011
Huh, haven't seen one myself in west PA. Thought most departments would have phased them out by now.

Now I'm actually leaning towards the charter arms police undercover, anyone have experiences with the company?
>>
>>29765095
You know it's half hearted middle of the road answers based on simple criteria that are really shitting up gun forums. Used to be there was more to judging a gun than just the trigger and the grip. Now it's "whatever looks cooler."
>>
>>29772416
some carry a j frame as a BUG.
>>
>>29768216
What I said was that it would be nice for someone to post any kind of actual empirical data rather than just repeated opinions from fuddlore and the internet. Basically the opposite of your post.
>>
>>29774794
>empirical data
The Ruger is a far stronger and more modern design. This hasn't been an actual debate for decades, feel free to do your own research you stupid fuck.
>>
>>29774703
Hmm yeah I guess that would be outta sight for me most the time since that could go pocket or ankle carry

I don't see "Ruger only" loads for 357 on their website any more, but Buffalo Bore still has 44mag loads that specify Ruger (and TC Encore/other snowflake shit) only, specifically not for use in S&W revolvers. Ruger revolvers also lock at 3 different points, S&W only lock at 2.

Not exactly hard evidence, but that sort of stuff is hard to come by. Revolver torture tests on YouTube aren't really a thing.

I'll tell you what I want, and what would eat up some crazy loads, an 8 shot 357 Redhawk. S&W has had 7 and 8 shot guns forever, come on Ruger, get with the times.
>>
Either is fine. I kinda prefer Ruger, but the Smith and Weson is more refined, I suppose.
>>
>>29771551
>>29771722
The fact that it's on a revolver gets me extra salty. Just swing out the cylinder, are there rounds inside? Done.

Thinking of getting a gp100 for a general use gun including concealed carry. It would be my first gun. I live in PA but near Harrisburg. I worry if it may be too big.
>>
>>29775953
It's Bretty big but probably doable. If you actually need to ever use it a polymer double stack 9 is best.
