Do any of you have custom foam cases for your firearms? I'm using the regular pick & pluck foam that came with my Pelican 1170 but I'd like to pick up a custom foam set to go with it. Anyone used a site like mycasebuilder.com for theirs before?
>>
>>29760110
yes. but nothing that fancy. was disappointed my glock came with shitty foam that allowed the pistol to just rattle around the case, so I made something myself. will post a pic in a bit

Yeah, I've had a few. IMO they're pretty inefficient space-wise. soft cases are generally better but I do still have one I repurposed for an ar pistol.

This is a big case and with the foam I can't fit my electric earpro in it.

Wat

0/10 would not put my pistol in that case

I built a hotwire cutter for mine

Did you use a template or just went for it?

Hi OP, >>29760533 again - here's my DIY effort. Kept the original thin slices of foam, and was lucky enough to find a foam slab of pretty much the exact thickness I needed. I've experimented with cutting foams before with electric knives etc, and with compressing and slicing etc - but in this case I just really gentle "sawed" the foam with a brand new scalpel blade fully extended. It worked well enough I could do it in one piece and was left with a foam glock, that I was then able to slice the trigger guard and trigger out of. Workable foam. Happy with results, holds my baby snug. Kept the foam glock for shits and gigs

The case pic was too big so you h of a picture of an egg sandwich.
Let me try again.

They're good for most uses just not long term storage. Foam retains too much moisture.

> template

I placed my stuff on poster board, traced it out with a pencil and a triangle. I then cleaned up the tracing using a straight-edge while also reducing the outline by ΒΌ" to provide a snug fit. I used the cut-outs to lay things out in the foam, and then as a guide for the wire. This way I didn't have permanent marker showing on the finished foam.
>>
>>29760723
yeah this is important - draw your outlines on the underside.
>>
>>29760723
>>29760786
I don't have outlines anywhere. I can flip the middle layer over and still not have showing outlines.

I also keep the templates under the foam on the lid. If I need to change the layout, I can buy new foam and pull out the templates to cut the new foam.

Just get an air tight case and use dessicant

I set up a Pelican 1495 (big laptop case) for a PS90 recently, so I could travel with it on airplanes. I had to get a little creative with cutting and reinforcing the foam in order to fit everything, and I'm still not really satisfied. I should have just sized up to a bigger case. The "pick and pluck" foam is pretty easy to work with, but when you have only one layer of it, it's very delicate. I ended up reinforcing the narrow strips with a thin layer of plastic (strip cut from contractor garbage bag) glued on with 3M spray glue.

Here's a shot with some of the magazines. If you do any custom cutting and want your work to look better than this, then use a razor blade. Sharpened pocket knives are not good enough.
>>
>>29760953
>>29760962
Also, just some information: you'll always be able to fit more guns into a Pelican case if you use your own wrapping/padding around the guns, instead of trying to work with cutting the foam just so.

fuck pick and pluck. get some Kaizen foam. it works much better and is a closed cell foam that will not hold moisture against your gun.

I bought some PE foam on ebay and used an old laptop hard case someone left in our office years ago. pretty easy to work with, just grab a sharpie and a box cutter and go to town.
>>
>>29761721
Interesting. Yes, that would have been a better option.
>>
>>29762013
you can get it at Woodcraft

Holy shit! Do you know how long I've looked for this shit? Grainger was the only place I found that sold it and I won't pay grainger prices. I looked at Field and Stream, Dick's sporting goods, Lowe's, Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, JoAnn Fabrics, Dodd's Camera, Sear's, Target, Harbor Freight and Tractor Supply.

Fucking Woodcrafters.. wood.. whatever man, thanks for the tip.
>>
I've seen those for sale at gun shows. Why even bother though? I feel like it offers less protection and more chance of the foam ripping
>>
>>29764266
we wood workers use it to Kaizen out lathe tools and expensive hand tools .

you can also order it direct from FastCap

I have a question regarding foam cases, and have been trying to find a solution to my problem. I have a 1911 that came with a foam case. The problem is that I have noticed that recently some parts have started turning brown or like light rusting, not sure. Wanted to know if foam cases have been known to do this, or if maybe its the place I store them at. I believe there is no moisture in the place I store them at, but not 100% sure. My AR15 has also been having the same reaction. Thanks
>>
>>29764453
>>29764453
yes it is rust.

open cell foam traps water and causes rust.

if you are going to store something long term in a foam case it need to be a closed cell foam , like Kaizen foam, not the kind of pick and pluck foam that pelican uses or the egg crate type foam found in many gun cases.

DONT STORE GUNS IN OPEN CELL FOAM
>>
>>29764590
Holy shit. The Kaizen shilling is strong in this thread.

How much is fastcap paying you?
>>
>>29764453
Moisture in any environment will be sealed in that case and caused light rust. Do what >>29760853 said and buy some moisture absorbing packets to throw in there
>>
>>29764656
nothing. i get all mine from work, but i do love it
>>
>>29760110
jesus, look at that shit job.....

>didnt center the gun and work the mags into the left over space.
>no more protective than stock Glock case

did you even try? or did you just want it to look tacticool n pretty?
>>
>>29764766
curious what you thought about mine (>>29760651
) if you thought OPs was so terrible?
>>
>>29764766
>centering the gun wouldn't of left enough room for the mags on each side
>pick & pluck foam is too delicate to have less than an inch of space between open sections
>standard Glock case offers no side protection while OP's does
>being this autistic

>>29765225
Hate to break this to you, but >>29765041 is right. Centering the gun leaves no room for padding on the sides at all.
>>
>>29765225
So not only can you not have adequate padding for the back of your pistol, by putting the pistol in the center you can also fit the same amount of magazines in there for no extra benefit. Brilliant. Your photoshop job has proved all of us wrong.
