My troubled uncle may or may not have got a Luger P08 previously owned by my grandfather and given to him by my senile grandmother. unfortunately as of late he had an outburst of his schizophrenia and depression. I'm a no guns. I want to know if a Luger pistol that has been in storage since my grandfather got it as a medic in Berlin in 1946 could fire given the right clip/bullets.
>>
>>29759625
take it apart and look for rust

and make some pics

Unless its rusted to shit, It will probably work fine. Dont shoot Winchester White Box tho. Shit turns the Luger into a Jam-O-Matic.
>>
>>29759625

Yes, absolutely. But you can take it to a competent gunsmith can ensure it hasn't been damaged or modified in an unsafe way.
>>
>>29759625
provided it is in good condition it will fire given the right ammunition, also the term is magazine.
does he own other guns that you know of besides this pistol?

Can a luger p08 survive a mud test?

Unlike an ak, yes it can.
>>
>Solid hunk of treated, machined steel

It's fine, unless it was stored in Vietnam-tier conditions.
>>
People regularly shoot guns made in the 1890's.

As long as it's not rusted shut and it has some good springs in it, it should be fine.

Just don't try to run +p+ shit through it.

you two need reading comprehension and situational awareness, op is not in possession of the gun and is not interested in shooting it.

nobody cares if his uncle shoots himself in the head with it afterwards
what's important is the condition of the gun

Most firearms, if cared for and stored properly, can last several lifetimes. I regularly shoot an 1897 Winchester shotgun.

You need to take it to a competent gun smith who can check the mechanical function and overall condition of the pistol.

Once he gives you the ok and you have secured a magazine and quality ammunition, you're good to go.
>>
>>29759733
Fucking lol.
>>29759625
Anon, Lugers don't use clips.
They use box magazines.

Also, they're reliable as fuck with the right ammo (read: not shit like Winchester white box)

Also, treat it well, strip it and oil it before firing it the first time.
Look up how to properly field strip and clean/maintain a P-08 Luger without getting bullshit fed to you from here.
Under no circumstances modify or paint/refinish it.

>>
>>29760424
DO NOT ASK THEM TO CONFISCATE THE GUN.

do it yourself

Depending on the variant and the condition it could be worth quite a lot.

If is just a normal one it wont be worth much

But snowflake lugers can go for 3-15k

Unless it was stored in exteemely humid or otherwise caustic conditions, it will probably fire. Are you worried about the safety of others around your uncle or just curious if it will?
>>
Anon I had to do the same thing, my grandfather was losing his marbles but because Fox news said he need a CCW he got one. He can hardly drive any more, and I doubt he'd be able to make split second decisions in a situation that'd require a gun (we live in a nice area, there's no point) so I removed a certain part from his carry piece so it won't chamber.

I own several guns and believe in strong gun rights but he's endangering others and my grandmother so it's for his own good.

I feed mine WWB, UMC, MagTech and American Eagle. I haven't had any issues with cheap ammo. Magazine springs, feed lips and the main spring (in that order of precedence) are the most common culprits for Parabellum malfunctions.
>>
>>29762879
>shoot the ammo it was designed for.
I can't really hold it against the gun for being designed to function with only one load, but I place great value on being able to shoot any in-spec ammo reliably. It's the same as how some people don't like safeties on carry guns or how the AK doesn't have a last round hold open. For me, it's simply a major turn off for a firearm not to be able to cycle a variety of ammunition. And I really, really want to like the luger.

thats a pretty dumb reason not to get a 100+ year old gun. but hey, more lugers for us.
>>
>>29763638
Hey, if new springs will help me run more kinds of ammo, then I'm all for it.
>>
>>29763458
it was designed for spitting out 1300fps 124gr bullets. Most of the malfunctions are from shooting pussyloads that are on the market today.

Just go buy 9mm NATO spec ammo and you should be fine. or if it can handle it, go get 124gr loaded to european specs.
>>
>>29762821
Buy a cheap beater one and experiment with what works. Keep in mind a cheap beater luger is still floating around $1000

Pistole Patrone 08 - 8g (123.45gr) bullet @ 1050 fps.

Shooting hot loads is needless.

How about defensive ammo like Federal HST? If it can shoot defense hollow points then I can completely get over the inability to use light target loads.
>>
>>29764060
>1050 fps.
while I don't doubt you Drake, was that data chrono'd recently from 5 decade old ammo?

I forget how they used to measure FPS back then, something with 2 boards wrapped with copper wire or some shit, but I'm pretty sure it I read somewhere that when they brought it back stateside after the war, they found it to go 1250fps and questioned how the gun wouldnt explode?

also, if you could shed some light on this: I heard the blacktipped pistolpatronen is the hotloaded SMG ammo. Is that true? Other places say SMG ammo was specifically marked. while most said 'pistol or SMG' on the box.

And if black shit (I assume the tar sealant?) is leaking out the case, is it still safe to/will it shoot?

That data came from German documents from WWI on to WWII. When the US Army tested German-made ammunition stateside in 1903 the velocity was between 1050 and 1090 fps.

The black bullet loads are 08mE (mit Eisenkern). These aren't loaded any hotter but the muzzle velocity is higher as the bullet weighs in around 97-100gr. Velocity is around 1330 fps.

The oil-proof loads had sealant around the primer and a visible ring of sealant around the case mouth.

Here are some German military 9mm's in my collection. #8 and #14 has an example of black case mouth sealant.

OP, this might not be a bad idea. You remove the gun from his reach WITHOUT antagonising him, and you get a sweet collector's piece AND family heirloom. I take you're not into guns, but that's one of the cases where it doesn't matter, you'll agree.
>>
>>29764227
only spec of German military ammo I've ever read is 360 m/s or 1180 fps. could the specs have changed when it was adopted by the German military in '04 and '08?
>>
>>29762952
I've only heard bad shit about it being overloaded or under loaded or cases splitting.
I don't shoot it myself; I typically use Monarch steel case ammo from sports academy.
