Why did firearms have so many serial numbers all over them?
>Why did they stop doing it?
>>
because military

Original hand-fitted parts together were not interchangeable. Modern production and design allowed for interchangeable parts, which was less of a bitch to handle. You didn't need to number the parts, because they were no longer unique to the weapon.

Then why do milsurp guns sometimes have mismatching numbers?

Also was an anti theft measure, I remember Ian mentioning some Poles stealing pistol parts for the resistance before getting caught and executed.

>>29749078
It was either done by an armorer who knew what he was doing or an after war modification.

Most guns have a range of parts that work given the tolerances were rather wide

>>29749016
Because of the cotton gin you faggot.
>>
>>29749078
They took all the damaged guns apart and put the parts in bins
They then put the guns back together with random parts

they duplicated serials famarino

Because pre-WW2, and especially around the turn on the 20th century, your military's rifle was a status symbol as well as a weapon.

Countries put pride into having the best made and most up to date. A rich country would want a good preforming rifle, they'd want it to be well made and look like a high class item that they could show off alongside their soldiers. Swedish Mausers are a perfect example.

tl;dr they took pride in the making and maintaining of them, so they serialed everything to spend the time and effort in doing it. Because they alternative would look and feel less prestigious, it also served the practical purpose of matching parts to that single weapon.

Also, this, a lot of stuff was tweaked slightly for the particular rifle it was mated to. Stocks were a big one for this, when bedding was crucial.

Well, ya see here boy. There was a time that Bob in new york made this part here. We'll call it the bolt. Now, tomma was way over in florida, made the super best stocks in the world americas.

But they were retarded since they were poor and didn't move to springfield nevada, where Mr. Jefferson lived. So Mr. J had to get those parts but needed papers to say that they were made by those two different people. Cause there were evil spaniards roaming around America at this time period. Also, he couldn't pay honest working citizens of America if they couldn't somehow prove that they made their shit. So they started serializing shit. 11A bolt made by Bob, USMC#1 by tomma. Then when Mr. Jefferson got all the parts together and then mass murdered all the heretics in his area. The End.

because most of the guns like this were from an era that immediatly followed the hand fitting described by>>29749052 and although the parts were now mass produced and made to be interchangeable the countries that made them were used to numbering every part to each weapon. much like features such as a magazine cut-off which turned your repeating rifle into a single shot because bean counters and brass thought individual soldiers would waste ammo if they were allowed to load more than 1 shot at a time during the actual utilization in war these features got scrubbed because they were useless and impeding mass production.
>>
Not just old guns that have multiple serial numbers.
On the EF 88, Barrel, body, bolt carrier, sight, suppressor have matching serial numbers.
>>
Who are you quoting?
Get out of here newfag! We dont want you here.
>>
Lots of countries still serialize errything.
