Vietnam is, like CHina, still ruled by a communist single party regime today. They have just learned from China to let in foreign investments. China also has shitloads of Starbucks and McDonalds in every single city. But does this make them US allies?
Their cozying up with the US is out of strategic necessity to balance out a rising China, who is historically a threat to Vietnam.
But Vietnam, to this day, still is jailing anti-regime dissidents and pro-democracy activists. In the end, they wont fight a war for the US against China.
