I was pretty assmad that my 8th grade English project at my private school was finding a combat vet to interview at the VFW. I hoped it would be another essay I could bullshit.
I found a guy who fought in the bulge with my grandfather's unit (he had died 8 years before) and he knew my grandfather. Total fucking coincidence as my grandfather was from Cleveland Ohio and I found this guy near Sant Antonio Texas.
To this day I wish I had stayed in touch with the old guy because he knew my grandpa and I never really did. He died a year after I interviewed him. But I still have him on tape discussing crossing minefields and finding abandoned POW camps, and one concentration camp.
Why did we not do everything possible to document these people's experiences? I have no clue.

They cut corners when they can and simply refuse their duty if possible. Hypocritical, naive, lazy. I want to see them when reality hits.

I'll have to raise 'em around guns and all. I went through a lot of outdoors programs and events that really helped me out, so I'll have to make sure they go through that.
I was a total pussy ~10 years ago. I would never be able to tolerate that version of myself now. Doing more outside and learning more really helped me break out of that, so I'm figuring that it'll help any children I have as well and keep them ready for anything that might happen.

Well I was a pussy kid and I've turned out alright. While at university, my parents just let me off to do whatever I needed to do. I didn't really cost them any money and I've managed to keep grades high and all, so I assume they aren't overly unhappy with how I turned out.
I hope I can pass that down to my children. I'll need to get a property away from the city so we can be outside city limits and have fun with guns and outdoor stuff more easily. Maybe I can find a way to work remote or something as a computer programmer.

Thank God I talked to my Grandfather about the war before he died. He had some of best stories. He was with the 517th PIR. He was a lineman and would climb up on telephone polls to repair the lines under sniper fire. Saw action in Italy, France, Belgium and deep into Germany. He spoke a lot about the war and I asked him about it. "It wasn't war all the time. We had a lot of fun over there. I met some of the greatest people I have ever known." I miss him way too much.
