Can someone explain why this is called a 7.62?

7.62 is bore diameter

The bullet diameter is usually slightly larger than bore diameter

Should go yell at wikipedia then

I can't find anything concrete on whether it's a .308 or a .310 bullet, but this shit is pissing me off. I wish there were tests to see just how much that .003-.004 diameter difference makes in Russian rifles.

Handloaders sometimes use .308 bullets in a 7.62x54mmR (according to the internet at least).
By all accounts, it kinda works, but the accuracy isn't stellar.

Yeah depending on the date of the manufacture and the condition of the bore, mosin nagants in particular can have bores going from .308 all the way to .312. General rule of thumb is the Finnish Nagants (the rare as balls ones) and more recent manufacture ones usually have the .308 bores, but honestly it's safer to slug your bore and find out for sure.

Only the pre M39s were .308/9 diameter, and that was because they weren't specifically chambered in 54r. They were 7.62x53r, which was a nearly interchangeable round loaded with a .308 diameter bullet instead of .311. They switched back due to abundance of captured russian ammunition and arms.

Russian barrels were generally around .312, never .308. I have a chinese rifle with a bore that is fairly sharp, but slugging it gave me about .3135 for the diameter. Probably a mix of poor tooling quality control and being shot out somewhat.

Just bore out your barrel.
Take a full lead shot that's slightly larger than your barrel, lube it up, stick it in the muzzle. Pound it in with a non-marring hammer. Now take a dowel that's at least as long as your barrel, and almost exactly the same diameter, cut to 6-inch lengths, and pound the ball all the way through until it comes out. Now measure the ball with a caliper.

Boom, not only do you have an answer, but you have a more exact answer for your specific gun than anything you'll find on the internet.

7.5 French uses 308 bullets.

Ah ok good to know, though only the Finn Ceremonial guard ones did that. But I'd imagine those other ones are probably equally rare as well.

8mm was originally .315 but then changed to .323 with the adoption of the spitzer bullet

Some people use 308 just fine and actually see increased accuracy
