AFAIK there were several small detachment of recon forces that landed 2 days ahead of the main force.
Originially their task was to mark targets and gun emplacements with smoke and guide artillery, but they lost most of their equipment due to rough sea or got captured by the Germans.
A camera man was assigned to one of the units to document the landings for later analysis. When the recon force could no longer perform their task, the leader decided to hide near the beach and wait for the main force. When the invasion began their hideout took a mortar hit and only the camera man and another guy survived, both wounded.
