an LMG is usually in an intermediate cartridge while MMG and GPMG are usually in a full sized rifle catridge.

A "battle rifle" would fill the role of an infantryman's rifle. It needs to be light enough so that the infantryman can manuever quickly and effectively. It is also not meant for sustained fire. The barrel on a "battle rifle" would be fairly thin to allow lightness, but a sustained amount of fire would cause the barrel to warp.
A machine gun needs to be able to put down sustained fire. It is heavier but able to absorb more heat and generally has a method of swapping barrels. Machine guns provide a base of fire to suppress an enemy to allow the infantrymen to maneuver to close and destroy the enemy.
Note that machine guns don't have to be in a full power rifle cartridge, the M249 is designated officially as an "automatic rifleman's rifle" but it is essentially just a very lightweight machine gun, swappable barrels and everything.

It is less about the mechanical nature of the rifle, and more about its doctrine of use. The BAR only held 20 rounds, but was used as a LMG in WW2. It filled the role of an LMG thus it WAS am LMG. If your army used a FAL with a drum mag for a machine gun role, doctrinally, then it would be a machine gun.
