Which country had the best and which had the worst submarines in WW2?
>>
Germany best subs.
Japs the worst subs.
>>
>>29720046

Bullshit. Nips had the fastest subs and best torpedoes.

Germans only got ahead with Type XXI.
>>
>>29720046
Technichally The USA had the best subs at the outset of war (Though germans built the best sub that eventually saw service in wartime, if only for a short time). The contribution the silent service made to the Pacific war was greater than the carrier force and most Americans are completely unaware.
>>
>>29720058
Nip subs were slow as fuck to dive and loud. Even their battleships dived faster.
>>
>>29720033
Germans Best.
Poland Worst.

Germany got the best subs.

Most of the American submarines were just plain obsolete at the beginning of the war.

Oh yes, because their battleships sinking for hours was faster than PoW or Arizona right?

No other nation had subs that could reach 20kn underwater.

Typical /k/ thread, a bunch of babies who know shit throwing info from wikipedia and video games at each other.

Go read what actual USN experts had to say about IJN subs:

Neither did Japan, until the last six months of the war.

Since WW1, Germans were dominating the seas and were crushing a great number of allied aid convoys in the Pacific. They had a really advanced submarines fleet.
USA had the worst submarines as their first advanced submarines came only in 1941.

>Arizona
>Shortly after 08:00, 10 Nakajima B5N "Kate" torpedo bombers, five each from the carriers Kaga and Hiryū, attacked Arizona.
>The last bomb hit at 08:06 in the vicinity of Turret II, likely penetrating the armored deck near the ammunition magazines located in the forward section of the ship. While not enough of the ship is intact to judge the exact location, its effects are indisputable: about seven seconds after the hit, the forward magazines detonated in a cataclysmic explosion, mostly venting through the sides of the ship and destroying much of the interior structure of the forward part of the ship.

Yamato and Musashi took hours and hundreds of planes to sink.

You burgers are hilarious.

Japan had the most powerful navy at that time. Lolz

They invented aircraft carriers. USA only copied all those technologies
>>

Brits invented carriers in ww1
>>

They invented the carrier doctrine, not carriers themselves.

Anyways, U-boats were not even good. They are crazy overrated. Type VII was mediocre compared to other subs of it's time. And German torpedoes were bad.

In 1940 they lost like 10 because the crews suffocated in the gas fumes.

You do know the HMS Argus was launched in 1917 right? Hosho wasn't launched until 1921. Hell even the ship design portion says it incorporates lessons learned from the Argus.

I will cede to you that it was the worlds first from the keel up Aircraft Carrier.

HMS Argus was an ocean liner and it was converted to an aircraft carrier "design" for purpose studies. it wasn't really "operational" .
>>

Hosho wasn't "operational" either. All the first carriers, the Hosho, Argus, Langley, were all experimental platforms to study naval aviation.

Yes, it was. How can a ship functioning as a carrier not be operational.

I mean it wasn't converted like the british one. it was entirely build as an aircraft carrier.

Type XXI is overrated as fuck, it was a glorified tech demo rushed into production before it was ready, the few of them that made it off the production lines barely worked. The ones that were seized by the allied powers post-war took years of work to bring up to useable specs.

Pretty typical Nazi Germany really, advanced design that shits the bed at the production stage to be a barely functional pile of crap.
>>
>>29720081
Did polan even had a "real" navy.
I thought they only had a bunch of ships that was under the commando of the Army
>>
>>29720622
Poland hadn't even a "real" ground forces... how the fuck would they have a navy ?

Poland was still using "horses and bayonets" defensive/attack style at the wake of WW2.
>>
>>29720702

Cute propaganda. Poland fought Nazis almost as long as France. And France also had help of UK. And wasn't attacked by the Soviets from the back.

Polish army was outdated, but considering they fought the #1 land power on the planet they did perfectly fine.
>>
>>29720818
Yeah, this.

Poland fought the two strongest armies on earth at the time and held out for awhile.

They were also pretty modern, IIRC.
>>
>>29720702
they did pretty fine
Poland's plan was a bit flawed, instead of holding up in the North and using the Vistula, they held out further East
and their plan wasn't really to defeat Germany, they were counting on the French and the Brits to actually do some real shit
what french got in fall gelb was just karma
>>

You're extremely stupid for thinking that
>>
>>29720901
>>29720922
>Poland's plan was a bit flawed
Eeeeeh. Polish officer corps were less competent then the Soviet ones at that point, which is saying something. Never mind the BRILLIANT political leadership that landed them in that sandwiched situation in the first place.
>>
>>29720941
You're the stupid one... he's just saying facts
Poland army was really outdated but no doubt they fought very bravely (Watch Apocalypse: the second world war documentary movie and educate yourself !!!)

Nazis literally crushed Warsaw into dust and Poland was so surrendered during the war that it was just a home to nazis holocaust camps.
>>
>>29721221
Apocalypse the 2nd world war was pretty good but they have some inaccuracy
like claiming the polacks charges into tanks and saying that the ruskies doesn't have enough rifle for it's troop
>>

Yeah mate...they did so fine !
>>

pretty fine in the sense of not getting curbstomped in 2 weeks
the germans had every conceivable advantage, plus having the soviets help
>>
>>29721239
Not relevant buddy...
It was pretty accurate with some different claimings. That's all !
>>
>>29720107
Dive depth was better than it needed to be. Until later in the war the Japs were only depth charging at real shallow depths (~100ft) because they didn't think US subs could go much deeper, when the Balao class had been tested as deep as 400ft. It would've stayed that way too if Congressman May didn't open his stupid mouth and get around 800 sailors killed.

What was so special about the Type XXI?
>>
>>29722220
it was designed to be underwater, unlike the earlier subs, which were boats that could dive
>>
>>29722243
but boat is not subermarine?
>>
>>29720199
Germany never dominated the seas. Submarine warfare was an annoyance but most ships got through. It was naval guerilla warfare. The Germans where very very good at it, the brits also got very very good at countering it.
>>
>>29720199
>In the pacific

Only a few German submarines ever went to the pacific retard, and the US boats around 1939 were pretty much just as good as the Type VII, and only got better at long range operation, something the Germans were NEVER extremely good at.
>>
>>29720091
If you're talking about the S-types, yeah those were vintage WWI/Early Interwar and were quickly shuffled up into areas like the Bering sea. The Porpoise class though, was pretty much a Type VII with longer range and an extra torpedo tube. US Submarines only got better from there.

>>29722220
The big difference was that the Type XXI was faster underwater than it was on the surface at cruising speeds. It was specifically designed to stay underwater for long periods of time - snorkel systems, etc, while also remaining stealthy what with the new coatings and ditching the deck gun. It marked a real shift from the earlier submarines, to the modern concept.

>>29721895
US submariners also had the highest proportional losses.

>>29720107
Japanese had really shitty ASW techniques to begin with, and US diving depth was perfectly fine for the Pacific. The thermocline is closer to the surface there.

Best subs in the tech department were the Germans.
Best USE of subs in the war goes to the USA.
>>
>>29723080
The Germans had a good head start but their tech was getting old 1943/44, however their use of acoustic torpedoes was fairly impressive. US received constant upgrades throughout the war including several advanced models of Air and Surface search radars fairly early on (1942/43).
>>
>>29720585
You're criticizing Germany's war situation rather than the design itself, which was sound.
>>
>>29720046

This.

> Twenty bucks says you've played Silent Hunter
>>
America had the best long range all purpose subs.

Japan was a close second, but they didn't have many of them.

Germany was by far the best submarine user, they knew exactly what they were going to use their subs for and their design and engineering was impeccable. That said, trying to use those subs outside of their intended purpose would have been disastrous. They were too specialized.
>>
>>29724312
>Not playing Silent Hunter

It's a fucking great game. Heavily recommend it, it's simulation enough to be in depth and arcade enough to be accessible, and you can ease yourself into it.

>>
>>29724551
I usually play SH4, really only used Trigger Maru after playing Vanilla for a decent amount of time. The added challenge is nice, and aircraft really fuck you up now instead of being glorious AA pinatas that can't hit shit.

I'll look more into Grey Wolves for SH3 honestly, but I always preferred 4 over 3.

5 a shit. Don't get 5.
>>
>>29724582
Haven't tried trigger Maru yet, most likely why I've never really stuck with 4. Yeah 5 looked like absolute shit, even with mods.

I've heard people on subsim refer to 5 as Silent Hunter on Training wheels.
>>
>>29724692
It's worse than that. It's silent hunter with SKILL UPGRADE TREES (SH4's crew skills stuff is pretty OK, and I think actually justified that it's linked to crew and can be acquired with crew experience rather than need renown) and game ending bugs due to being linked with the Uplay system. It's fucking awful.

Some guy did a youtube LP of 5 that convinced me to get three, and I'll never regret it. I got 4 after that. That's the only good thing about 5.
>>
>>29724744
haha, good point about it's usefulness. Fucking hell, I wish there was a Silent Hunter General but I've only seen 2 or 3 threads on it in 4 years.

I don't think the US army had much input on how to use USN submarines either, sempai.
In any case IJN subs weren't very good at the things they were used for: scouting and attacking warships. IJN subs were shit because they were bad at being subs, not because they were poorly used.
