why is it that straight pull bolt action rifles died out while refined knockoffs of the Dryse needle gun were dominant for literally the rest if the bolt gun's tenure? why aren't straight pulls made commonly anymore? could a straight pull be as accurate, if I could make a precision long range rifle in 6.5 creedmore on a straight pull, what advantages would the mauser/enfield/ nagant action have over it?

Easier to manufacture the standard bolt action than it is to manufacture the straight pull action.

That, and nobody has found a way to make a straight pull as precise as a standard mauser tier action. Sure, you have the K31, but that's not really any more accurate than your normal bolt gun.

I see, thanks for being honest with me, doc. I guess my dream of a 1600 yard 6.5 Creedmoor straightpull rifle is just that. which of the other actions doesn't have that shitty cock on unlocking feature that makes the initial motion of the throw more difficult?

Lee Endfields are as quick as or quicker than a Straight pull, are they not?

Straight pull is overrated as fuck.

A fair few modern bolts cock on close, but you'll mostly see it in older models.
Mauser 1896, Mauser 93, Lee Enfields and Arisaka's are good bets for cock on close.

I prefer cock on open myself.

straight pull at the time early on was concluded to being a fucking meme and so nobody cared but the swiss.

Fuck them, they literally don't know shit about actual warfare so they had a lot of time fucking around making gimmicky meme guns.

Call me when the k31 wins a war or at least participates in one LOL

More costly and complicated to make than a bolt action, for a marginally faster rate of fire. So it was not really worth it.
Also keep in ming armies at the time were reluctant to give soldiers fast shooting weapons, out of fear of them wasting their ammo.

Some straight pulls are still made today. Most notably the browning T bolt in 22 and the Blaser R93 and R8.

The R93 is known for having claimed a few lives though.

Also here is a fun Blaser add.

It is more about lineage than concept. Guns were submitted then won in trials for the most part. The piecemeal design by governments was rare.

Navy Lee was a disaster.

The Schmidt-Rubin waaaay too long until the K31. Even then very complicated and expensive manufacture.

1886-1890 Mannlicher was the simplest/best but too weak for smokeless.

That made the Hapsburgs OK with the 1895, but that turned out kinda expensive and still very dependent on hand fitting .

Note that refurb 91/39's feel like shit thanks to the lack of that time consuming touch.
