Ferrero Rocher aside, golf ball size grenades were tight. I don't know why they stopped being useful if they were useful in Vietnam Shit.

Whats the difference between an offensive and defensive grenade?
Do we still differentiate the two or it just multipurpose grenades now?
>>
>>29712685
offensive hand grenades have a smaller charge and a smaller kill/injure radius while defensive grenades have a larger that they could kill a person in. To increase the lethal radius defensive hand grenades are larger and contain more explosive and are built to produce more fragments.
Offensive hand grenades are supposed to be more useful when assaulting a position

>be a boot 0311
>go to grenade range
>everyone is supposed to throw 10 grenades
>after two throws the "senior" Marines rather play on phones and smoke cigarettes
>keep making me get back in line
>throw about 25 grenades
>become pissed off at throwing grenades
>regular people don't understand one of the coolest experiences has now become my chore
>>

Offensive and defensive grenades are a concept throwback to WWI.

Offensive grenaded relied on concussion force to kill the enemy, and had a smaller kill radius. The idea was advancing troops could be hit by shrapnel as they advanced from their own grenades. You don't really want that so having a grenade with higher explosives and

Defensive grenades threw shrapnel, and have a larger kill radius. You didn't have to worry about running into shrapnel if you throw a grenade over a trench wall at the enemy.

Now most armies just use fragmentation grenades. There really isn't a need for two different kinds of grenades.
>>
>>29712732
*you don't really want a grenade that throws shrapnel back at your advancing troops.
>>
>>29712724

Kind of. Offensive grenades often have no fragmenting material at all and a larger charge then a comparable defensive grenade. The Mk3A2 for example is 8 ounces of TNT, compared to 6.5 ounces of comp B in a M67.

>>29712685
There's a huge number of grenades used today, with lots of specialized ones intended for different roles.
>>
Some older German ones.

Glass grenades, ca 1740.

And an incendiary "grenade" with anti-firefighter addons. The whole thing would be filled, and probably covered, with an incendiary mixture (an extremely low saltpetre, high sulphur blackpowder for example). The lead balls sit on top of paper tubes filled with proper blackpowder, which the fire will set off at random. 17th century.

I keep hearing this, but it's never ever sourced. There are a lot of history "near facts" that are invented after the fact, so I like seeing a primary citation.

On the right is an experimental impact grenade that was never fielded because it was insanely dangerous and the experiment was a failure.

Had like half a pawn stars episode about it.

>Putting +P ammunition in your plastic gun
>>
>>29719025
This is the biggest thing I hear coming out of boots camps these days in Army and Marines. Every evolution there's some Gomer Pyle chucklefuck who ducked up his/her shoulder, arm, wrist throwing a grenade or lobbed it about five feet before it dropped to the ground and had to be shoved to cover by their instructor.

I just don't get it. The mechanics of throwing a grenade in basic are completely different from how they are thrown in the field. Why don't they teach the field application methods of throwing? It's always this shotput style or a retarded ass sky hook basketball shot.
