Hello there folks.

I am in the market for an "assault" rifle.

I enjoy simplicity and reliability. Something that needs very minimal maintenance and is going to work when I need it to.

Furthermore I do not need any rail system for scopes, or red dots, or fancy lasers. I will not be using them. Iron sights are good enough for me.

My budget is around 1K

Yes. That is what the cool kids call them isn't it?

Semi-Automatic

Get a lever action .30-30.
Assault some deer or rabbits with it.
Like magic, you've got an assault rifle.

AK-47 variant of some sort. Obviously. Reliable, powerful, simple, ammo is common, etc.

You're the litteral autist, not him

Btw op, go for an AK pattern, sturdy rifles, no rails at all, quite affordable ammo.

Something like a Sako 5.56 or a Galil could prove very good, if you're able to get your hands on one ofc.

We don't like this word here kid. You are looking for a semi-automatic modern sporting rifle. Look into ak variants, they fit your description.

An Arsenal AK sounds exactly like what you'd want.

https://www.k-var.com/shop/Arsenal-Rifles

If you want something less "assault" looking newer Ruger mini-14s and mini-30s might be great for you

M1 Garand.
Semi-automatic.
Has convenient "clips" for speedy reloading of a potent cartridge.
No rails, lasers or superfluous business about.
Has been used in many an "assault" in the past.

An ak or basic AR-15 would work fine

~

Ar's you have to clean a bit more often, I usually go like 700 rounds ish. Longer if you keep it lubed.

If you want to buy an assembled rifle:

Cheaper: m&p15 sport II ~$700

Nicer: Colt LE6920 $899

~

Ak's are much easier on the maintenance side of things, if you put a bit of lube in when you first get your rifle, you will be good to go for thousands of rounds...

cheaper: wasr10 ~$650

Nicer: Arsenal SLR series ~$1,100+

WASR 10/63
It's cheap and passable.
Don't buy the ones without the scope-mount on the left side of the receiver, those are the old ones and they're widely know for being terrible.
If you find that the gun is heavy, get plastic mags and plastic furniture.

Second option is a Smith & Wesson M&P-15, contrary to popular belief, the AR-15 doesn't need to be cleaned obsessively, you can basically just clean it a few times a year, lube is more important.

If the regular M&P-15 looks too expensive to you, consider the Sport model. Uses some cheaper parts, and lacks a few features, but does the same things.

This a poor recommendation for a first rifle. Costing around 1000, before even affixing an optic, they offer absolutely NO advantage over an AR. You can buy and outfit an entry level AR with a 200 dollar scope for the same cost. In 7.62x39 they don't eat cheap ammo too well and have several light strikes per mag so youre going to pay more for ammo too.

Just isn't worth it
>>
Colt LE6920 or something from BCM.
Or get the M&P15 sport II and use the remaining money for ammo

Assuming your are stateside and plan on punching holes in nothing bigger than a wild hog or a piece of paper, your money will go farthest with an AR-15.
>>
>>29711673
>Costing around 1000, before even affixing an optic,
Are you looking at the Mini-14 Target? The Ranch and Tactical have an MSRP of $800, so $700 for the rifle at a good place.
Also not every rifle needs an optic.

>In 7.62x39 they don't eat cheap ammo too well and have several light strikes per mag
Thing is that this is very easy to fix, I don't know why Ruger don't do it themselves.

An "assault rifle" by definition has select fire capability. Your average AR-15 or AK variant widely available on the civilian market is not select fire and is no different from any other semi automatic rifle. You will sound like an idiot if you call your semi auto rifle an "assault rifle".

The more you know.

MINI-14all.jpg

Dear OP,

I vote too for the Mini-14 in .223 and stainless steel all weather. I was up shooting mine today and after coming home there really was nothing at all to clean. I took it since I though it was going to rain and this rifle does not care about "weather" or water. After say 10,000 rounds I guess you could pop off the dust cover and knock the soot out against a rock. It is self cleaning. Hollywood likes them since they can fire long and hard with dirty blank rounds.

I would avoid the mini-30 since that ammo is usually shit and there have been reported problems with the Mini-30. Unknown about the new 300 Blackout versions. Just get the 223 and be happy.

Some people whine about the cost and it runs about $750 new and used. They don't loose value so you might as well buy a new one. Some ass****s even try to charge more for used ones...

The older ones had a thinner barrel that could warp when hot and lost some accuracy for those using scopes at long range. Now fixed in the new versions. New they come with scope rings and I think a rail thing I am sure I tossed somewhere...

It has special mags that tend to cost more than the AR-15 world. Plenty of after market mags though with 95% reliability just like the AR-15s. Everyone will tell you to use real Ruger mags for it though since they are 100.001% reliable. If you want to go fudd the 5 round mags fits flush and there are 30 and ups too for crazy time.

Don't stand to the right of the gun when firing since Jim Sullivan made them so they eject spent cartridges about 20 yards :D There must be a long story behind that.....

There are a lot of after market things for them but far less than the 50,000 after market things for the AR-15 world.

You can beat trees to death with it and piss on it it clean it. If you never clean or lub it it will out live you by about 50 years. Just get the black plastic stock since it is unbreakable and you don't have to give a shit if you scratch it. :)

A dumb monkey can pull part a mini-14 very easily. It really only has four parts... But most of us only run a bore snake through them to clean them.

They are both. The piston is actually welded to the op rod making them one piece. These guns are just about a simple as Jim Sullivan and Bill Ruger could figure out how to make them while grabbing all the ideas from the M-14 and Garand they could. Simple, reliable, minimum parts...

No fancy shit is used. If you want all the super fancy shit then get an AR-15 :)

My LGS sells the brand new Ruger stainless 5805 for $739. Non stainless versions are well less than $700.

20 round mags from Ruger are $30 and the 30 rounds are $40.

>>

MSRP is typically $100 higher than what the actual market price is.
It's not at all hard to find a brand new Mini, 580 series, for $700-$800

If your LGS has a $1000 pricetag on a regular 5.56mm Mini-14, then that means they're probably overpricing everything else too and you need to find a new place to shop.
