Pardon me, sport but getting drunk at the VFW for $1 a beer seems like a decent benefit. Plus I like to watch all the sports on their massive big screen TV. Mozzarella sticks with marinara for $1, a huge basket of fries for $1, a burger for $1 and a bunch of other goodies. Plus they have connections with the VA to help hook me up on my case.

Being in the military is just a job, don't make it out to be something super special, because for most people it isn't. That's mainly propaganda to dupe kids into signing away years of their life thinking they'll be some l337 operator and not some bored grunt, desk jockey, or equipment loading specialist. Join because you want to make it a career, or because you want to save cash and GI bill it into a relatively easy life afterwards if you are anything like me. Don't fall for the operator bullshit.
I was in the military and there's like one thread that's even slightly relevant to my specific experiences on any given week. Most of these "military" threads other than getting some light enlistment/basic training advice are either non military people(strongly suspect they're underage kids often) making assumptions about how the military or military equipment works, or just not relevant to most of us who have been in anyway since we did lots of different things.

This is also bullshit. What they don't get in pay, they get in shit like housing allowance. Not having to buy food if they don't really want too. Not having to pay taxes on the stuff they buy, getting military discounts, clothing allowances, free room and board. One could literally pull a 4 year stretch and not have to pay for a goddamn thing.
