Why aren't swords more popular in home defense? Easy maintenance, no ammo, easier to purchase (literally can buy at any flea market), can deflect bullets with enough training, added fear factor and utterly silent.

These two things alone would make a small bludgeon or large knife infinitely more practical than a traditional sword.

Spears have been the primary weapon of levy soldiers for hundreds and thousands of years. They have reach, easily do damage. To consider though is that whoever gets inside your range will have quite the advantage. Most burglars won't be armed, but he could just grab your spear if he's fast (and you're slow). He can't grab a sword.

Spears are still problematic in close. Historically they were group/formation weapons. You want a sword, especially if you have next to no skill with the spear.

I don't know what properties star metal has, but depending on its uses besides making swords, I sell it to the highest bidder, make a (bunch of) really good scalpels and surgical tools, put it to use in scientific experiments, or if I REALLY want to use it myself I make myself a really good survival knife/multitool and maybe replace some of the critical parts in my rifle. No way I'll use good metal on a sword I won't even use.

Swords are not light sabers..! Humans do not have the reflexes to block a bullet with a sword and most swords would not be able to deflect a round enough to cause a miss. Plus if you did catch a round with your blade I would suspect your blade weapon will be out of action
Needs space, cannot deflect bullets, fear factor mehhhh if intruder has a firearm. My swords needs more maintenance attention than my guns. Any sword that I'm intending to fight with will actually cost more than a mid tier pistol due to metallurgical requirements. Assuming something happened and I could pick one of my swords I have only one sword that I would absolutely trust in a life or death situation. Most sporting swords are not that durable because it's not cost effective.
Otherwise Swords are better than nothing and can be effective. I would also say might be able to get past most "He's a armed crazy repercussions" if you attend sporting training or suchlike.
