So by not smoking, I can buy a whole Prvi 200 round battle pack a month and never see a change in my budget.

I force myself to endure a 4-8 day withdrawal. Usually try to schedule them when its most convenient like during a weekend or break from work/classes.
If you don't do these breaks and endure the discomfort for a short while you will end up being totally fucked.

The big factor here is scale, there being a fuckton more diesel locomotives running on rails today than steam. Chicago in particular is being hit hard from emissions from its fuckhuge railyard, as an example. Therefore, targeting a historic steam railroad for polluting is a classic example of missing the forest for the trees. Neither steam nor diesel engines, however, compare to the amount of shit factories spew out.

Let's say you have two steam engines that are identical except for the energy source they use to boil the water. One uses coal and one uses diesel fuel.
It takes X amount of BTUs to boil the water in the boiler
For the same output of BTUs, coal is producing more pounds of CO2 than diesel.
