Everyone always has their own combinations of reasons. I always wanted to join the Navy because I love the ocean, my grandpa was in the Navy during WWII, I'll get to meet a lot of people and make lasting connections, and of course getting college paid for after is bretty nice.
>>
Might seem like an easy way to get money, jump ahead, get respect, travel the world, or get out of a rut. Or you may just want to bust doors down with guns. I've always wondered the same thing, but someone has to do it....
>>
>muh benefits
Not a milshill, but that's why a lot join.
>>
If you have to ask you probably won't understand. Not in an edgy way but just in a different strokes for different folks type way
>>
Honestly? I enlisted (with a BA) because I didn't feel like being a responsible adult for a few more years. Junior enlisted are basically treated like children, so it worked out for me. Now that responsibility is being placed upon me (made staff), I'm going to submit a package for commissioning. If I'm going to be responsible, might as well get paid more.

>>29651431
Also, I think chicks who do that to their eyebrows look stupid.
>>
>>29651431
I joined because one day i realized i had no idea what I wanted to do in life, but I wanted to do something. I also noticed my group of friends didnt want to move forward in their lives, they just wanted to stay in the same minimum wage job doing the same things everyday with no plan to advance in their goals or careers. I decided to join the army because I was stuck trying to transfer out of community college to a university (in california you have to take classes not related to your major in order to transfer to a university). So after I got out of the army after 6 years as a 35T, i used the GI bill to get into a university on the east coast, which only required me to be able to pay for the university, instead of having to take unrelated classes like art, health, and humanities courses. After working in the field I did, I was able to experience and meet with people working in various intelligence and federal career fields, which is where I want to end up after getting my degree.

Also, all of the friends back home, are still exactly where they were when I left 7 years ago.

sorry for the wall of text

I did enlist when I went in I had planned to do my first contract active duty enlisted than go green to gold and be an officer...then I saw what officer life looked like and wanted no part of it. 1st of all being enlisted let me do all the things I wanted to do in the Army: shoot guns, camp out inna woods, play with with tracked vehicles(bradlees), and kick in doors. being an officer once you get past company command you have nothing to look forward to beyond staff bullshit and being an office drone at headquarters and drowning in admin paperwork. which is one of the reasons i have done everything in my power to not get promoted beyond E5 because even on the enlisted side once you get promoted too far you no llonger do the shit you signed up for.

I'm only TA, but I wanted to do something productive while I studied.
>>
I asked everyone that when I went thru the (ch)air force. Here are the reasons I got from most frequent to less:
1- Training/benefits that can be acquired with little money/experience
2- To kill someone legally
3- Was homeless
4- Believe in America/military (kind of surprised this was last)
>>
>>29651431
I can't join as an officer because I'm an immigrant
>>
I enlisted in the Marines because no one else from my small highschool was doing anything cool, and I like to be a special snowflake.

Plus, I love guns and military history. So, I wanted to be part of that.

>Fun side story
When my recruiter asked what MOS I wanted, I said infantry. Some other recruiter in the office apparently infantry beforehand and asked me why I wanted to join the grunts. I said "I want to slit a Haji's throat in their sleep." He just chuckled and said I'd fit right in.

I miss those days. Being an old man in college really fucking sucks.
>>
>>29651431
Because most officers are desk jockeys. Personally would never have joined if I knew all I ever as going to do was sit at a desk and give speeches.
>>
>>29652188
Well, once you get your citizenship you can probably go through OCS. And if you have a qualifying MOS, you could always go Warrant Officer. Technically any enlisted can become a WO because IT specialists and aviators (at least in the Army) don't require a specific feeder MOS. I love America. Not many countries grant us immigrants so many freedoms

Grow up in rural or small town middle America, never see anything outside of your own state, never understand what it takes to become a successful professional with a college education, don't learn anything at shit-tier rural school, all media that reaches you is government-approved propaganda-tier shit, want money to buy a Mustang or new truck.

There, that entire list applies to like 80% of enlistees and a solid percentage of the remainder are from inner-city areas and want to join the biggest gang on earth.

nah most people join for the benefits, especially married people, they get treated like actual gods from a benefits standpoint. I personally didnt enjoy a single minute of my time in the Marines because of how much of a child they treat you like. Also any human who cant figure out "Like...what am I gunna be mannn?" by the time they're 24 or older then they probably wont accomplish shit anyway.

This is the reason their are liberal arts degree holders, daycare worker loser cunts, psychologists, philosophers and countless other horrible life choices, and these horrible careers are by college degree holders. At the very least ex military people can be smart enough to know to get into a trade or something that pays well. At my college none of these 18 year olds with Bob Marley shirts they stole from the mall have any clue what they want and I love knowing none of them are going to be in a job interview with me.

The last time a U.S. military action actively preserved the peace and safety of the nation was probably the First Gulf war in 1990.

Like it or not, Iraq was getting itself into a position where it could completely fuck the global oil market.

It's pretty good bait otherwise.

I'm one of those fuccbois that wanted to enlist right after high school, even got to the physical standards of the Navy but didn't because he didn't want to stop smoking weed. I also have a crippling fear of being court-martialed or having my life ruined for something like forgetting to do something, waking up late or not saluting somebody. Among other things, typical anxiety/depression headcase lol.

Now I sort of regret not enlisting. Being an "old man" in college isn't that bad considering that most college kids don't have shit and you'll be much better off by comparison. I want to be an officer now, and I think I will pursue it after college. Seems to be much better for someone like me.

If you do, do 4 years and gtfo. There is no point in a career in the military these days. Reduced retirement to 40% top and some tsp matching bs. Enlisted in 2010 thinking I would be grandfathered in. Only to find out that after dec 31 2006 you are not eligible for 50% retirement. Wtf is that shit?! Do six years time thinking ill retire with what they told me and they backdate some shit all the way back to 2006?! Our military is fucking going down the shitter.

I dont think you understand the significance of a military retirement plan. Most people who make it past 20 are entitled to 50% base pay of their retired rank. I'm no law expert but it seems that coming up with a new retirement plan and fucking people over after 10 years of signing the dotted line is misleading to say the least.

Whew close one. I almost just had an existential crisis.

I guess one of the biggest reasons people enlist is to not feel like a bag of shit. I know tons of veterans who do almost nothing. They sit at home, smoke, drink, watch TV, and play video games. And then they talk shit on the non-veterans who do all the same thing. The difference is that the veteran feels like he's done something with his life I guess.

Whats life but to get more learnt, so thats not a bad route to go
The Marines had a 3 platform test, 20 Pull-ups, 100 Sit-ups in 2 min, and running (3 miles in 18 min). Each worth 100 points, 225 would qualify you and 270 would classify you as desired. The best idea is to go HAM on Pull ups and sit up cause you can lost the most points there, running you need a good score but its the easier to not lose points

Here's a small list OP
>Just to see if I could make it
>Family tradition
>College money
>Want to go to war
>Want to fuck up hadji
>Acquire trade skills to use on the outside
>I'm going to be Special Forces/Navy SEAL/Ranger/insert cool guy shit here
>I get to play with guns all day
>I'll get to blow shit up
>I always wanted to join the military
>Nothing better to do
>Fuck it, I'll join the Marines
>Get to drive a tank
>Get to jump out of planes
>Muh benefits
>Boredom
>Looks good on future job applications
>Job involves a lot of time outside playing with guns in the woods with friends

These are just a few of the many reasons people join, and usually it's a combination of at least several reasons off that list.

Also keep in mind that a lot of people join up and realize that what they thought they were getting into actually sucks. Turns out most people aren't going to make it into SOF, FTXs arent' that fun, and even shooting guns gets boring when it's not just you at the bench mag dumping into a paper target.

On the other hand some people get in and find out they love or want to do more. Personally I just took another three year enlistment to see if I could make it over to SF after another deployment as a Ranger. It's really not a bad job to be honest.

Travel. In the Air Force, you can go to Bongland, Germany, Italy, Korea, and Japan. Or you can go to New Mexico, or Afghanistan. Best if you are a lucky person.

Education. You can take college while active duty in the Air Force. Up to 100% tuition paid off for free, by taxpayers.

As part of my college education I've read quite a few memoirs from men serving all throughout history, there seem to be a few common threads:

>Boredom
You'd be surprised how many of these guys join up out of a kind of "nothing better to do" attitude. Particularly I remember the memoir of Charles Musser, he fought in the civil war and cited boredom as a primary reason why he joined up.
>Conscription
Several men I read about were conscripted and have varied opinions on it. Most seem to see it as the natural course of things, they can't do anything to fight it so why bother sort of deal. Some people like Richard Kingsbury who published his memoirs and called them "The Eighteen-Year-Old Replacement: Facing Combat in Patton's Third Army" viewed the draft as terrifying and wanted to burn their draft cards and flee but this was actually pretty uncommon. Some men, like my father, would spend their whole lives insisting they loved their time in the Army (he was in Vietnam) but in private would admit to their family members their honest views. I found a letter from him to my grandmother recently and he's complaining like no other about the Army, but according to my mom he loved it.
>Young Men Love It
Probably the most surprising thing from any of the memoirs I've read is that they all seem, at the end of the day, like they really enjoy all of the strange and interesting things that they'll get to experience in war. It truly is an experience like no other, and for a young man with a durable body and an easily molded mind it's probably one of the most exciting things he can do with his life at that point. Musser recalls several occasions where even in the civil war he got to indulge in some debauchery with his company. Ernst Junger in "Storm of Steel" mentions at least two gorgeous french girls that he spends time with. Even Kingsbury appreciates the men he serves alongside and wishes most of them the best, he loves the things he gets to see and the women he meets.

I'm late to the thread, but I would not join simply because there is nothing to do.

There are no great wars, nor are there immediate conflicts. It would essentially be a desk job with a gun minus the desk. It does not interest me. However, the idea of joining a PMC is becoming more and more appealing. It seems more in tune with the atmosphere and attitude of /k/ (as autistic as that sounds). No political correctness. No special rewards. Just you, your buds, some based old dudes, and a gun. And even then, you don't mean jack shit without pulling your weight. I know PMCs are almost strictly "Guard this oil rig" or "Escort this man" but doing it for 4x the salary of E3 is worth it. I'm tied stateside by college and my parents' approval so it doesn't matter either way.

But if there was a war breaking out tomorrow, I'd sign up for the Marines in a heartbeat.

Sure but between 18-22 I learned valuable life skills I would have not learned if I was doing aforementioned. I have little in me against military service, just don't throw it in my face as if you contribute to society more than I do in order to win an argument, get props, or discounts on shit.

>I took ASVAB
>was fed the "you could be a nuclear engineer" line
>could have been chair force officer

But guess what, I wouldn't have been a graduate chemical engineer.. hell I'm a journeyman machinist as well and I wouldn't even give that up for military service.

I was bored, lost and confused too and I see the appeal, I just don't see it as THE end-all choice as if it was a life hack or something

Because I wanted a free masters degree.

Once I get my MBA I can go right back into my career as a GS-12/13 civilian.

The real question is why people enlist into dead-end jobs like SecFo, Maintenance, or Services. Fucking idiots.
>>
Not everyone can or should be an officer, and there will always be a need for enlisted personnel.

Enlisted jobs offer a lot of good jobs that you won't be able to get as an officer in the same field. If you are a Comm Offcier you will not get the training or certs the technicians or data will have, that can lead to very high paying jobs once you are out.

Enlistment is also not an end all. There are plenty of mustangs who started out enlisted, and bring their experience and knowledge with them.
>>
>>29658600
maintenance isnt dead end, all my buddies were HVAC mechanics in the military and now they all work for a casino lol, legitimate trade to have. I'm seriously considering to enlist.

I'm 20 and on first year of engineering. I'm not from US so I get to study on the best university in the whole country basically for free, but fuck I don't know if I'm going to make it. Shit isn't really all that hard but it's fucking boring and it's killing me.

My whole motivation is to later specialize in weaponry and have a job related to my interests, but I realized it probably won't be like I imagine it and I don't want to end up in a job I find fucking boring.

All I want to do is a job related to firearms. I know no one is going to pay me to shoot guns 24/7 unless I'm next Jerry Miculek, I'm realistic.

Gunsmithing is not really an option since I live in a country with no gun culture. So that leaves me with maybe working as a firearms instructor on a local range (I know I won't shoot guns all that often as an instructor, from my understanding it's mostly paperwork and teaching people but I'm fine with that) or enlisting. Income is not an issue for me.

I have no idea what to do, lots of things to choose from. Being an adult sucks.

subs get more pay? you were on a sub? is it like 20 hour workdays?
>>
>>29668289
they do get sub pay which is anywhere from 150-500 extra a month depending how salty you are. I am now. technically it is 24 hour work days when you are underway.
>>
>>29668335
but realistically how much work does one have to give a day?
>>
>>29651431
>Why would anyone enlist?
Because I got to choose the MOS I wanted and now I get to go to college for free on the Chapter 33 GI Bill.
>>
>>29668350
if you are looking to skate and leech you should look somewhere else. the chairforce may be more your style
>>
>>29651431
Because not everyone wants to do admin bullshit.

I enlisted the summer after my senior year. I wanted to fight in a war and I did. Cashed in on my GI bill and I'm set to graduate this spring.

Feels pretty good man.

i'm obviously willing to work a bunch but fuck i just hear so much negative shit about nuke that im leery
but ive always been interested in nuke shit which is why i've been interested in it. otherwise i might just go SNA instead
how long is the commitment?
>>
>>29668636
If you are willing to work then I don't see the issue here. what "negative shit" are you hearing
6 years for enlisted I don't know or really care about officers desu
>>
>>29668712
tbhtbhtbhtbhtbhtbhtbhtbhtbhtbh
hmm i dunno just power school being shit and sub conditions being shit
the recruiter said stuff about being a nuke instructor but i dunno how that might be
>>
I wanted to kill someone and save some lives
>>
>>29652317

Lol, I didn't pay shit for my college. I learned a trade from my dad. 16 yrs later I am a master plumber who owns a business. So fuck off welfare fag.
>>
>>29668751
of course power school is going to suck 100 cocks and you will have zero privacy on a sub also don't be a power school instructor that is gay as fuck. all I can tell you is I have been in 4.5 years and I have lived in 4 different states, owned an $80,000 car at 23 bought 14k of guns last month, been to 5 different countries, fucked all kind of pussy and made awesome friends that I would kill for all while getting paid. but at the end of the day it is your choice to nut up or fuck off somewhere else.

>>
For fun. It's the most you'll NEVER want to have again.

Plus you sometimes meet friends for life, that is if they don't die from suicide or accidents.
>>
I joined the Navy cause I'm from bumfuck Arkansas and it was the easiest way out and get away from that environment
>>
>>29660048

there are a lot of people who're working in ATC as ex-mil. not ATC myself but i talk to them daily/worked with them last summer. it's stressful and graduating tech school is just the first step. gotta work hard to get qualified, then your 5 level so you're not a useless POS and you can be a watch supe.
>>
>>29667911

SWO nukes are super rare, you're not really a nuke and not really a SWO so you're kinda terrible at both, and you top out at O-6. last two CNO's had dolphins

on the other hand you're not on a sub.
>>
>>29651474
I never understood this argument. At least they're providing a necessary service to society and working
>>
>>29668636

GO DO AVIATION JESUS CHRIST REALLY IS THAT A REAL QUESTION OH MY GOD YOU'RE A FUCKING RETARD GO FLY JETS ON THE GOVERNMENT'S DIME I FLEW A MOUNTAIN LOW LEVEL THAT THE TAXPAYERS PAID FOR TODAY WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU WANT TO BE UNDER THE WATER WE LIKE EACH OTHER AT THE END OF THE DAY GO FLY YOUNG ONE GO FLY
>>
>>29669192
i'd only hit it and quit it to be quite tbqh or try to lateral to IW or something not be a lifer. or maybe do a few years then get my med degree then come back as those navy surgeon dudes.
is it really that rare? that sucks
>>29668913
did you buy a tesla? thats pretty queer. i gotta learn more about this shit tomorrow when i talk to the nukeduke he said theres like 4 different fields i could go into
>>29669214
i gotta retest and do better in my aviation scores. i think i'd go nfo i dunno if i like being at the hands of a pilot though who might crash on us but at least its only 8 years and not 10. you fly? neat whats your day like?
i think i'd pick the super bug or maybe the orion i dunno
>>
>>29669261
no it was a C7 Z06 corvette
>>
>>29651431
You wish to contribute to, and protect the society which makes your quality of life possible?
>>
>>29669261

yeah i did a NUPOC thing at the end of grad school where they tried to convince me to do sub officer. there's a lot that's neat about it, but there's also a lot that's terrible. from talking to people, there's almost no chance to lateral transfer once Reactors has their talons in you.

also my day was
>show up to work at 0830
>chill and study
>1030 NVG lab, super dope but also super SA-draining
>1200 do some casual mission planning
>1330 rally for tonight's low level
>1345 MISSION PLAN MY FACE OFF. ROLL TO BACKUP BACKUP PLAN. HEY EVERYBODY WRITE IN ALL THIS NEW STUFF BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE TO GO OVER IT BECAUSE IT'S MY FIRST TIME DOING THIS AND I SUCK
>1730 take off and go rage
>1945 land, high five my bros that i didn't puke, get ready for debrief
>2130 done debriefing, shitpost on /k/, facetime the girlfriend, put off making dinner
>>
>>29669339
whats your platform? how long have you been doing it? how was flightschool? do you do shit in foreign countries or just train for now?
>>
>>29669414

a fighter. flying in general about 3 years. flight school was alternately incredibly stressful and incredibly fun. training for now.
>>
>>29651431
For me, at first it was about serving my country. Then I realized, I just wanted to play with guns and hang out with likeminded people.

Free college was just a bonus.
>>
>>29669425
the superbug? thats pretty cool do they still do that TOPGUN school?
you did SERE and everything as well right?
>>
>>29669450
a fighter. and yes, TOPGUN is still around.

SERE was the best 3 weeks i never want to do again.
>>
>>29669467
SERE looks kickass but like you said something you wouldnt want to do again
you did the Gforce thing too? land on a carrier?
i wish i could just be told what i shoudl do and what i'd enjoy
>>
>>29669491

i have not landed on a carrier. but you pull G's. the G-strain is second nature at this point. it's rather amazing to think about how quickly it becomes that way.
>>
>>29651431
muh GI bill and to fuck sludgy high mileage puss.
>>
>>29658749
Former hydro troop here. Wasn't my first job, and I wish to God it had not been my last. Hated every minute of it - granted, if you went from the north to Louisiana and got plopped down on a tarmack with some glorified flying cigars, you'd hate it too.
Also, most certainly don't make 130K per year. That's a damn lie and if anyone honestly believes it they are a moron or have ungodly luck getting what they want.
>>
>>29669510
fucking neat
thanks for answering these questions gave me a lot to think about, think ill tell the army dude to fuck off and just try for NFO. do you have to do crew work like the dudes who help you land and shit on carriers if youre an NFO/aviator? thats what im interested as well frankly just as much if not more than flying
>>
>>29669615

from what i understand, LSO is an upgrade. you have to be an aviator or a NFO to do it.
