>Driving down the Gardez highway in Afghanistan
>on our way back to our FOB we passed a mountain town on this overlook by the highway
>A small girl was playing by the edge, waving to us as we drove past

Rough.

I assume the Al Alresh camp up near the border? That place is kind of boring, but built up now at least.

The Sharm El-Shiek base is fucking GOAT. It's built right outside the tourist town. We used to (I'm sure people can't anymore because ISIS lol) go out every weekend to party on the town, scuba dive, and generally party. We could even stay out over night with waivers.

This place was like Cancun for Russians and Euros.

>drive a steak through his heart
>>
My grandfather was in the airforce as a chief mechanic on a base in California. He moved up in the ranks and was generally liked by his commanders for being a good worker as well as skilled. Never had an aircraft sustain preventable mechanical failure that he worked on.

He's got tons of stories, I really need to write them all down, but this particular one he ended up riding on a DDG back in the 70s for a temporary deployment to a different base. They were going to dock parallel to the base but as they were doing the maneuver the wind changed and the ship didn't turn, so they ended up smashing straight into to dockyard and shearing two of the three protective crossties covering the base's fuel line before the ship finally stopped moving.

He was outside of the ship at the time with an Englishman, who suddenly just grabbed him and yelled to not let go of the railing. He said he thought the ship was exploding it was shaking so bad.

He dined with the officers that night, said it was the quietest meal he ever sat through. Somehow the ship was actually still seaworthy no less, but it stayed in port for a month anyways and they had people checking and double checking and triple checking the hull and pretty much all of the systems.

I can share a story from my great grandfather from germany when he was on the SS back in the day
>It was july 27,1943
>After fighting through russians for most of the day with his other equals on the tank
>eventually they all stop at a town that seemed to be nearly untouched by war
>thinking that it was strange to see such a sight they investigate
>after sweeping house to church and so on they return to the rest of the squad with the few that investigated
>with a troubled face my great grand father was the one whom had to share their findings
>everyone in the town was dead, women, children, men, dogs, cats everything was either hung or stranged to death by each other
>they didnt want anything to have to die by the hand of germans

After that day nothing was the same to him.

First one I heard on my wonderful booze cruise to the magical middle east

>be 0331 in fallujah, we'll call him Rooster.
>he has to cover some ricky ticky recon guys, posts up in a two story building with his A gunner and boot ammo carrier
>night time falls and recon guys aren't back yet, waiting on them to start a sleep plan.
>he and the A Gunner cover the front of the building, ammo carrier watching the back, if they turn around they can see each other
>starting to get late when Rooster hears some grunting and rustling, turns to see the ammo carrier lying on the floor
>absent mindedly, he takes his M240 and bolts inside leaving his A Gunner to keep watch
>Ammo Carrier must've nodded off, got his throat slit and bled out, kid was only 19 years old
>he hears footsteps and hushed talking coming from upstairs
>he makes his way carefully up the stairs, grabbing the 240 by the bipod
>2nd floor is divided by a single wall right in the middle, he hears the Muj walking around from the other side
>angry and out for blood over the death of his boot, he takes a knee and squirts about 40-50 rounds through the wall
>can't hear any bodies hitting the floor since the burst left of nearly deaf, he has to make sure they're dead
>goes up to the door, sees a dead Muj on the floor, he peeks around the corner with his 240
>theres a Muj slumped against the wall staring right at him, he grabs the barrel and Rooster immediately grabs his hand so he can't let go
>as you guys may know, 50 shots in like 10 seconds=hot barrel
>Muj starts to scream and holler, Rooster can hear his skin begin to bubble as he tries to line up his barrel to his face
>finally muscles it against the Muj's face and lets the 240 rip, blows the fuckers head right off

He told me this story after saying how he hated watching boots burn themseves with a hot barrel as a Combat Instructor

>then, some Mullah from Baghdad shows up and declares jihad against the Americans over a minaret

>heavy fighting ensues but thats another story in itself

Thanks but I domt really need the cheer. This thread just got me thinking. Yeah seeing Starshiptrooper die fucks with me still, but I loved being at war. I still talk to my buddy from there, we rehash old stories endlessly.
The hard part is wondering if there will be another war. In real life, when I tell stories about making a guy blow himself up prematurely and I laugh, people give me looks that let me know they dont see the humor in it.
I think about Iraq like most guys would feel about "the one that got away" or Chasing Amy. It was rough, it was hard, there were times I wanted to die....but god damn it was the some of best times of my life. Its up there with my son being born and getting married.

You are equating my experience (the child being knocked out) with that of OP (the child being killed). Given that my nation did not operate in the US areas of Afghanistan, his tale is quite likely.
Don't be reddit and assume that similarity means it is the same event.

On the contrary, you are the one equating the two by saying you believe OP's bullshit story because of the similar "motivation".

And of course the motivation is fully justified, the leap to child murder being the desperate justifications of someone trying to figure out what the fuck they are doing in Afghanistan to begin with.

Bacha bazi is considered a luxury and status symbol and the US government is far more likely to try to bribe and co-opt the individuals engaging in it rather than kill them, in the depraved notion of "nation building".

The US military is literally enabling child rape.

No, no, it really probably not. Germans had a tight record of things that went down. You can be sure that any war crimes of that scale that went down got pinned on the right side.
Plus his story is not believable. It's not something Russians would do. It did happen later in the war, but it was Germans killing themselves as they believed a life without the third reich in power wouldn't be worth living.

I bet its rare but I guarantee shit happens like that in clusterfucks like Fallujah.

Had a buddy of mine who came back from Fallujah with a story about killing some hadji with a knife. We had a late night drinking and shooting the shit and someone was playing with some bigass knife they were throwing at a board. Completely out of nowhere the guy gets some dead fucking eyes and starts off on his story.

They were walking down some street and some fucker with an AK bent out of a window directly above him in the middle of his squad. He grabbed the front of the gun/guy's arm and yanked him halfway out of the window. He wrestled his own knife out of his chestrig and jammed it up underneath the hadji's chin. Then went right back to talking about paintball or whammer 40k like nothing had happened.

Dude was a stone cold psychopath, something about how he told it convinced me completely.

Another less crazy friend of mine had some durka bust out of a closet with a pistol and knife and almost kill him while they were clearing houses in some town. His plate carrier took two pistol rounds and he was wrestling with the knife arm on the ground before his battle buddy managed to turn around and smash the fuck out of the hadji with the butt of his M249.

>The hard part is wondering if there will be another war.

It's about as certain as sunrise. I enlisted in 79, when there were still a ton of Vietnam vets on AD. I retired in 99, when we were just starting to become aware of what might be in store for us. Between SEA and GWOT we had Grenada, Panama, and Desert Storm, plus a bunch of "interventions" and the like.

The VA will get counselling for you, if you really want. Or, you can walk into a VFW hall, find the Vietnam combat vet, and buy him a beer. He'll get the next one. And you'll learn some coping mechanisms, without getting your name on a list.

Your war is over. There'll be one for your son, though. Start writing down things that'll be useful for him when his turn in the barrel comes. Get some tips from that 'Nam vet I told you to get drunk with, too.

You didn't enlist to spare your son from having to do the same thing. You did it so he won't have to fight his war on our shores.

Most suck trucks have two hoses on the pump, so you can go from using the pump to suck the cesspit to using the pump to empty the truck at the processing plant, just by switching hoses.

It's likely that the pump to tank hose came off.
>>
>>29658299
I'm just saying that Kissinger wasn't infallible. While you will always have a portion of the military being the gung-ho patriotic types who won't ask too many questions, I wouldn't paint the organization as a whole with the stereotype. I do think that we've created some sort of weird brand of hero-worship in the US regarding the military (I respect the everloving shit out of vets but sometimes the ads and posters and overtness of some it weirds me out) but I don't know how we're supposed to fix that, or if we ever will. I lay more blame at policymakers, politicians, and higher ranking officers (for some reason we aren't sacking generals like we used to) for getting us into unenviable situations for the most part (I still want to find and choke that one asshole who thought it was a good idea to disband the Iraqi military and the Baath party in Iraq simultaneously). I do think that the military tends to clamp down too hard on innovative ideas (Read up on Jim Gant and his One Tribe at a Time essay and his biography, and then what happened to him) but I wouldn't say that most soldiers are complicit in things like the boyfucking going on in Afghanistan, at least not intentionally. Most grunts don't get to decide which Afghan schmuck they have to work with, and when they are confronted with outright pedophilia there's little they can do about it due to the higher ups wanting the "Afghans to take over" (yeah I watched This is What Winning Looks like, some depressing shit). This leads me back to what I posted here
>>29658121
Regarding the whole corrupt Afghan administration, its a bitter pill because we either have them or the Taliban with little in-between. If we pulled the plug I would think that the Afghan Civil War would obviously resume in earnest, but no one would really win.
>>
>>29643741

>>
>>29658414
Continuing on, you have to remember that Taliban rule brought some stability but internationally I believe only a handful of countries recognized them, and the Taliban could not into economics, foreign relations, or proper governance (If you were Pashtun, you got promoted over everyone else). They were consistently pissing off both China and Russia by supporting Islamic rebels in Chechnya and Xinjiang, Iran threatened outright invasion on multiple occasions, and they were giving help to their guys on the Paki side of the border and further de-stabilizing Pakistan (not that I give a shit about the Pakis since they had a direct hand in all of this, but their nukes getting in the wrong hands is a problem). The Taliban resuming control could see a repeat of last time, and I don't see a future where the Taliban don't get bumped off or invaded by yet another power because inevitably they'll piss one of their neighbors off to the point of armed intervention.

Hence the continued propping up of a shitty but slightly (and I mean slightly) viable government by us. There is no way to really win in Afghanistan, never was. Solid rule of the country hasn't been a thing for decades at this point, and I don't see it coming back anytime soon unless you can raise Ahmed Shah Massoud from the grave. Hence the corruption, hence the boyfucking, hence the bribery.
>>
>>29658414

The statement still holds true. One has to be stupid in order to hand years of his life over to people who have demonstrated themselves to be evil malignant narcissists.

As for the pawns part, there isn't really a whole lot of debate here. They follow orders or they get punished. As you said, they don't have a say in the matter. This ties in to the part about being dumb.

The individual soldier in Afghanistan can hate on the pederasty all he wants, he is serving an organization that at best tolerates it and at worst funds it. No amount of bluster about "killing ragheads" will change that.
>>
>>29658488
Well I guess I was somewhat missing the mark in my rant on the general status of Afghanistan, but
>evil malignant narcissists
I'm not sure how you're experiences have been with veterans or active duty, but most have been at best awesome or at worst a minor inconvenience. I have two friends joining up less out of a sense of patriotic duty and more out of some life decisions and other issues, but neither strike me as the type who do anything unthinkingly. Granted in the system that they will be a part of they won't really have room to question anything, but that's the system.
>Pawns
That's literally every military on the face of the earth and has been that way since the beginning of recorded history. Some stay that way, others rise, others die. Would you say that Napoleon, Peter the Great, or Peng Dehuai were dumb? Unless we're speaking about a distinction between enlisted and officers.
>Serving an organization that at best tolerates it and at worst funds it
I acknowledge that in my two posts as being part of the shitty deal we have there.
>>
>>29658488
>I dqd meps and now all military is ebil. That's why my life is meaningless while I watch my little pony. Its somebody ekses fault promis
>>

The evil malignant narcissists are the politicians and military bureaucracy they work for. Patriotism today is a cover for idiocy and/or psychopathy.

>That's literally every military on the face of the earth and has been that way since the beginning of recorded history

Then the insight is far more applicable than the military of the US in the 70's. There's a reason the line rankles the American militarist. Post-Vietnam, the Pentagon has tried very hard to convince the American people that soldiers are no longer pawns to be sacrificed in a foreign policy catastrophe. Kissinger's truism contradicts that fantasy.

Those primary sources are relevant to Vietnam. How hard are you going to twist logic to make them fit your view of GWOT/Iraq/Afghanistan?

Because those propaganda efforts have been proven to be ongoing and continual

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/29/politics/third-journalist-was-paid-to-promote-bush-policies.html

Hell, the Pentagon is still re-writing Vietnam, 50 years later::

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/10/us/pentagons-web-timeline-brings-back-vietnam-and-protesters-.html?_r=1

Then there's the propaganda link between the Pentagon and Hollywood, a topic which has been written about extensively, to the point where it has its own moniker: the military-entertainment complex. Google it.

Notice the reverberate theme. Good vs evil. The US government is hardly the first to hammer on this, because it works.

As of 2009, the Pentagon spends $4.7 billion a year on psy-ops. Amazingly, the Pentagon still maintains the lie that all of this money is spent on foreigners, even though psyops officers were caught trying to influence US senators on Capitol Hill. One wonders where all that money is spent.

Well I'm not inclined to completely agree with you over certain things, I do agree that realpolitik is king and that inevitably soldiers are simply a part of a much much bigger picture where they simply comprise of one of our many assets to be used in the game of diplomacy. But, at the same time I try to recognize the human element that is there. Yes, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 the word patriotism was used to ill effect to boost recruitment (in my opinion a bad move, our military in the '90s was at the complete top of their game regarding most things), I still believe in it as it was originally intended (loyal to the country over the government, respect the people, keep an eye on the feds etc) but it has indeed been twisted. As for idiocy and psychopathy, both have uses in a military and always have (someone has to end up pulling the trigger). I do place some value on the poor shmucks who go and come back, but you also have to realize without all of this we wouldn't have some of the best firearm instructors and teachers in the firearms community (with some exceptions). While I think that military-worship has gotten a little out of control, I still see it as vital to force projection and being used as leverage in diplomacy (again, realpolitik). Maybe its the bleeding heart idealist in me but I cannot disregard the human part of the whole equation, as much as Kissinger was willing to (which I will admit he probably had to in order to make the kind of decisions he did). Also I would warn against putting anyone up on a pedestal, no one is infallible.
>>29658641
>Lose multiple wars
I would consider our current engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan to be continuous, and thus far while we haven't won we're still there and haven't lost yet. Vietnam was a loss, but actually if you're a fan of Kissinger you should know we managed to make some very interesting power plays internationally during the war that mitigated some of it.

>>29650702
it has nothing to do with us being invaders, at least if it was a girl child. People who were friendly to us would do the same if we saw a girl without a veil.

But it wasn't always a beating or a killing.

Many of them carry this useless looking curved knife. It's essentially useless except for three tasks, it is great at docking the tail of a young goat or sheep, it's pretty good at cutting a plug of chew, and it's great at scaring the fuck out of a girl's face.

I saw a girl who lost control of her veil in strong winds get her cheek cut so bad we could see her teeth, and I've heard similar stories from 5 friends who deployed in different places or at different times. In my case, the person who did it was considered a VIP, and was strongly connected to the local pro-US faction It took a lot of effort to convince him to let a female American medic dress her wound. Many of the older women show evidence of similar disfiguring cuts, if you ever happen to see one without a veil (something I only saw through spotting scope).

It's about controlling their women, not about politics.

>>

That this is one of maybe a half dozen stories that managed to come out, out of the thousands of soldiers forced to liaise with a society that tolerates child rape, means most of them stayed silent. Good show.

>>29658795
Also you seem to be overstating the effect of a lot of this stuff. Yeah American Sniper and other such movies like Lone Survivor get embraced by many, but on /k/ at least you should know we had extensive threads on how full of shit Chris Kyle was and how Luttrell probably made a lot of shit up. Granted this is 4chan and we by no means make up a large portion of the majority, I could feel the sentiment echoed by some of my peers in everyday life. The propaganda machine (not debating what it is, everyone does it) is getting a little on the old side and aside from occasional high-budget shooters don't attract as much attention. Also you mention all of this but at least initially Hollywood used to be very grey on the subject of Vietnam, hell to my knowledge I know only of We Were Soldiers and Green Berets being the only overtly either pro-war or extremely pro-US films that I know of. The other more well known flicks blur the lines heavily, as they should. Granted I wouldn't be surprised if you're right and Hollywood is indeed in the military's pocket in some way (Michael star spangled Bay comes to mind) but sooner or later, you get films that don't match the agenda). What you claim on the whole military complex isn't all encompassing, though it does have some truth to it.

As a /k/ommando, I know about Obama's attempts to appeal directly to the American people through the use of emotion is propaganda. Him being surrounded by kids while attempting to pass legislation is propaganda. Birth of a Nation was great propaganda for its time, as was Triumph of the Will and Battleship Potemkin. After every conflict, every major political decision, and catastrophe propaganda is immediately started by all parties involved to shift blame. Psy-ops, counterintelligence, falsification, these things go back decades. I'm not trying to understate the seriousness of it today but you're acting like this is the first time this shit happens.

>>29658938

Modern Pentagon propaganda is subtle. They seem to take a multi-pronged approach:

- Flat out, totally undisguised propaganda: American Sniper, Act of Valor, Lone Survivor
- Stupid teenager shit: Battleship, Battle: Los Angeles. The Rock
- Positive portrayals of the military in minor roles, or of ex-military: X-Men First Class, Ironman, GI Joe, Walking Tall

Many people can see through the first category. The second category is there for a reason: kids are easy to sway. The third is arguably the most effective: put out the good vibes on the military even when it is not the topic at hand. That won't ever "get old".

Bestiality is totally, completely believable. A grandfather murdering his five year old grand-daughter for waving at the invaders... not so much.

Note the difference. Many people have observed bestiality first-hand from the Afghans and it is considered a fairly tolerated thing. So personal experience is applicable.

Casual child murder on the other hand isn't so tolerated even in Afghanistan, nor is it commonly reported. But you believe it because it fits your worldview. Personal experience goes out the window, to be replaced by a helpfully crafted narrative. Yours is no logical thought process, just a trained reaction.

After all, you believe it is propaganda because that fits _your_ worldview. My personal experience (and that of my colleagues) gets ignored and replaced by a helpfully-crafted narrative that it is all "propaganda".

And it is in that area of the world where acid is thrown in women's faces for so little as failing to wear a face-veil, not to mention honour killings.

... but im certain that that too, will be put down as "Pentagon propaganda" by you, despite there being ample evidence of such things by non-US sources.

My skepticism comes from an accepted, widespread academic (anthropology, sociology, etc) that child murder (even of other children) is considered universally taboo even in societies which first-worlders would consider barbaric. Killing your own kin is even more so. Telling a story of something like this happening requires extraordinary proof. Especially when it is passed off as a common occurrence to encourage the troops, or make returned vets feel better about their wasted blood and years.

So no, my judgment isn't a trained reaction, unlike yours.

Well, it makes sense now- you are either studying in one of those branches of education or have studied one of them.

The blatant anti-military bias in those disciplines shows though, by the way.

And it is not passed off as a common occurrence, OP did not claim it happened multiple times, nor has anyone else.

But based on the lack of care shown to children that I observed in Afghanistan, OP's story would not surprise me. Afghans are indifferent or brutal towards children, excluding their own immediate offspring.
My observations are, of course, limited to one province over a limited period of time, but I can extrapolate that the nation as a whole is far less caring of children than we in the west are, otherwise locals would take steps to bring backwards areas into line with areas of the country where children are not mistreated.

No man I've actually spoken to some Afghan expats, the ones I met were decent folks glad to get the hell out in most circumstances. I'm not attempting to generalize or anything but the vibe I get is someone very sure of their position and is quite smug about it. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing (we do the same to the gungrabbers) its just that I think that some of his position is slightly flawed or is stemming from something emotional. Which is just a theory but that's me. I'm pretty sure I've encountered this poster before and while there is a slight anti-military vibe of sorts on /k/, I believe at times that most people posting about "welfare queens" and the like are rather childish. I've never served and am in Uni currently, but I know that there's more to the relationship of vets and the community than the black and white image that some people here push. Yes, the whole hero worship thing at least to me is out of hand but most vets I meet are rather unassuming guys that will mention it only when asked and are decent people (with some exceptions but that's normal given how many people serve in the US military). Yes there are moto guys who brag about it everywhere and yes there are guys that are obnoxious as fuck about it (I know one particularly insufferable cunt who's in the national guard and talks like he's hot shit all the time), but there's also decent guys in the mix as well (volunteered to be a front desk guy at the 1st Division Museum at Cantigny Park in Illinois, half the staff were vets who were some of the nicest people I'd ever met). Furthermore given the relationship between the military and firearms I believe its only logical that there will be some overlap in the discussion of firearms and the military on /k/, for better or worse. I mean we have vets working in the firearms industry and working as trainers, so I don't understand why people can't see the obvious connections.

>be my grandad
>in the New Zealand airforce stationed in England during WWII
>take off in a spitfire
>engine dies after take off
>not enough altitude to return to base
>English countryside covered in stone walls that would fuck your shit up if you hit one
>crash though a gate, both wings get torn right off
>come to a stop
>cute girl that was working in the field walks over
>have tea at her house
>jeep comes and picks him up
>hop in spitfire with both wings still attached

PSYOP here. You are the victim of enemy PSYOP.
1) from the outset of Nam, the US gov was touting a certain line. Why would they stop? The Gulf of Tonkin was bullshit, but we were facing a much more complicated threat than a South East Asian country going commie.
2) the link between the US mlitary and Hollywood? Is laughable. The liberal elite of Hollywood have nothing but contempt for the military and are fairly open about it. Movies portray Good vs Evil because tjat is a lot easier to put into a 90min movie than it is to show at length the social, economic and political reasons that are the root cause of major conflicts. Imagine Saving Private Ryan with a 2hour back story that outlines how the Germans fell to the Nazis due to economic woes caised by punishment for WWI and how the Nazis sold the war as attempting to get more land to grow food for the Germans.
3)Yeah PSYOP was used to show some political leaders around. Nothing more. We are used to speaking to large groups and briefing brass off the cuff about why we should or should not do things. So what if PSYOP talked to them and showed them around? Do you think my MOS has some sort of Jedi mind control ability?

I think he is gone. People like that are blinded by their own biases. He already hated the US/military before he started "doing research" on websites that hate the US/military. So everything he said he blieved. In PSYOP I call these "the people we have to shoot." Because nothing, will change their mind. No matter how many kids the Taliban kill, no matter how many hoapitals the US builds and no matter how many women, men or goats ISIS rapes, he will still blame the US for all the worlds problems.

>Casual child murder on the other hand isn't so tolerated

Despite the YT videos showing exactly that sort of thing happening in that part of the world? Are you really trying to push your narrative that hard?

Honor killings are a thing. Deal with it.

Well, its a shame the "professor" buggered off just as he was getting btfo.

I bet a hundred US $ he would have believed any story about US soldiers killing civilians though.

I had heard the joke before then. But yeah it was just like that.
>Be Iraq 04, a few weeks prior.
>I got tasked out to the Marines
>I am one of 12 Soldiers on the base, 3 are in my unit. The others I have nothing to do with.
>I stand out.
>Go to the Marine supply area, ask for black spray paint.
>supply guy asks how much?
>All of it.
>Whatever, here.
>and thats how I spray painted most of a humvee black.
