I carry tip down because I move around a lot at work in heavy cloths and most of my knives can and do at times get jimmied open inside of my pocket and have stabbed me in the past while I reached for them. so I carry all of the tip down because I'm used to drawing tip down now.

So I don't know shit about knives really. I was recommended to get an ESEE 6 by a friend and the only thing I cringe at is the price.

How does it stack up to something like the Ontario RD6? The RD6 is like half the price so I'm curious if there's that big of a quality difference between the two.

This is the currect answer. But, if you're deadset on a Ka-Bar lookalike, buy one of the Ontario versions. Thicker blade stock and the tang isn't quite as skinny. The Cold Steel Leatherneck also looks decent, but I haven't had hands on experience with them.
>>
>>29587104
i have big hands, im worried about the size of the handle and the width of the blade itself
>>
>>29586466
The Ontario RD6 is the same exact thing (except blade shape) what you really pay for with ESEE is their awesome warranty, I wish I had a picture but a sawed one in half and he sent me a new one no questions asked
>>
>>29587203
>i have big hands

Look into a Becker BK7 or BK9 then. I find the handles uncomfortably large, so you should be good to go. Solid fucking knives, too.

is there even a perfect knife to trust your life with, given the following circumstances? you are thrust into the middle of the wilderness 250km in every direction. you are only equipped with basic every day clothing and a single knife. there also may or may not be a zombie apocalypse incoming.

what single knife would you seriously trust your life with? something that encompasses killing or fending off wild animals, carving wood, batoning, filleting fish and field dressing animal carcasses.

>>
>>29590381
Les Stroud basically does that with a multitool, and when shit's really getting rough, he'll use a Wal-Mart Buck fixed blade. Get your skills right first.

For the sake of jerking off your question, you're probably going to want a tough, bigass fixed blade of some kind. If you want Busse-tier quality without having to kidnap and sell children to sex-traffickers, Swamp Rat is doing a run of the Rodent 9 right now.

http://www.swampratknifeworks.com/available-now-rodent-9/
>>
>>29590381

That I own? Mora Companion. It's light, it's tough, it has a scandinavian grind that I can sharpen on literally any surface. I own "better" knives, but I don't think I own any I'd prefer to trust my life to.

>killing or fending off wild animals
Not something you should do with any knife. I'm making a spear first five minutes inna middle of nowhere. Absolute worst case scenario, I make a club. Pretty quickly I'd have a bow. Not a good one maybe, but a bow.

People survived with knives much worse than the worst knives sold today. There was once a time when the only tool you would reliably have was a goddamn pointy rock. Then a bronze knife. Then shitty iron. People relied on tools so inferior to what we have today it's insane to imagine humanity made it.

> If you have deep pockets and can be patient, you can't do much better for a knife

With patience you can, I'd rather have a 3V knife from Nathan the machinist any day.
>>
>>29591917
Then go for it, a custom knife maker is sometimes what people prefer. To be fair you will have a fun time trying to break INFI, I say more deep pockets being from Australia, what is sold as a $400 knife with shipping is over $600 for me. I am currently up to week 16 or 17 waiting on my current order

It really just depends on what you want in a knife
>>
>>29591927
Nathan is custom in the same way Busse combat is, fucking low volume with huge wait times, I just think 3v is a better steel to throw lots of money at and he's considered one of the best heat treaters of it, you're also going to struggle to hurt a 3v knife but it holds an edge better than Infi.
>>
>>29591944
Fair enough, I have never heard of Nathan before, I might give him a look. I personally love infi, but as I said before it really boils down to preference
>>
>>29592011
I'd probably throw down on a Busse if I didn't dislike their business model, reminds me of Spyderco's sprint runs.

I was watching a video of humans petting some friendly lions through a cage last night and it occurred to me I need to buy a bigger knife.
I was thinking something with a clip point like a bowie knife.

Legal restrictions aside just assume there is a work around where you could carry whatever size blade.
What size does a knife start to become unpractical like it'd be difficult to pull it out or have a lot of range of motion with it?

How big of a knife do you think you could get away carrying without other people thinking you're a nut job?
>>

No not against a real threat. Against someone that could beat the living shit out of you, yes. Against someone that could maim or outright kill you, no.
I stopped carrying my 3in. knife all together unless I need it as a tool. I think stabbing someone with it would legally complicate a self defense scenario without offering any real benefit over being able to grapple with both hands in a struggle. I'd rather try to get a loop hole knuckle duster type thing than a small knife.

jx2 jessmuk. The brainchild of Chris Tanner from preparedmind101. And it's freaking awesome. Not just for a knife designed by a youtuber, but as a knife in general.

Probably the most comfortable handle I have used to date, and I've used a few. Works in every hand position I can imagine. Scandi grind is great, the curved belly works wonders for ergonomics too. It's not a revolution in design - no knife is, but it's damn good.

It'll open someone's throat up, and you can stick it in someone's brain stem so yeah. If you're stabbing someone with a pocket knife, eyes, throat, and spinal column are best targets as they usually are unprotected and will put someone out of a fight or at least make it much harder for them to hurt you.

That looks like a nice pocket knife. I like being able to reach into my pocket and feel it eagle on front, cutouts on the release bar part, would get a really easy feel for how it's oriented if it flipped around in my pocket just by touch.
Wouldn't carry it because it's too pretty and I kind of expect to fuck up my knives a bit if I have to.

How much is too much for knives? I don't know a whole lot about the knife market but the ones I'm looking at are nearly 60 dollars.
>>
>>29606197
Puukkos will most likely be the comfiest (and lightest) knives you will ever use. The eronomics of a knife from an average american company can't hold a candle to them.
>>29606288
General rule of thumb is $100-200 will get you a nice quality production knife.
Any higher, you're typically paying for the name and special snowflake materials.
Lower, it can be hit or miss. But there are some decent quality puukkos that can be had at $60
>>
>>29606389
I watched someone's youtube review of the same pukko that I was talking about and that I posted a pic of. He said its a pretty good knife, but their general qualities kind of vary.
>>
>>29606288
There are tons of sub 100$ that are just barely not as good as much more expensive ones. Kabar bk 2 7 or 9 Ontario sp 1 and many other Ontario's anything made by buck knife pretty much, and the rtak series and many others are just some examples of knives that are amazingly good and surely good enough to do anything you would ever ask of it. There are knives that are better that cost 3-5X more money, but they surely are not 3-5X better
>>
>>29606389

$100-200 is high end stuff - Dark Timber, Fiddleback, LT, Skookum - all can be had for less than $200 (skookum is pushing it).

There are really good knives in the 80-100 dollar range, and you can find some solid options around 50.
>>
>>29606408
Yeah, they're excellent belt knives. That said, they're not designed for "modern survivalist" use their knives (ie batoning their knives through thick, knotty hardwood)

>>29606849
>implying you can readily find a skookum or a Fiddleback for that price.

Yeah there are some solid sub-$100 knives. I just find that the 100-200 are the most reliable as far as QC and materials go.

Hoping I can get some opinions from people who know this stuff better than me, or anyone I actually know.

Military antique shop had a very out of place AK bayonet that when I asked about it was offered it for $25

With a bit of research I matched it to a Clayco AKM II bayonet.

This a good deal for the Chinese bayonet clone? I could probably haggle it down a few bucks, but I have no idea what kind of deal I'm getting or frankly if its worth having it for anything beyond shits and giggles.
