I don't think we can tell very much by that pic besides that it's an earlier uniform as evidence by the scalloped pockets.
But since there's no badges or medals that would show some type of action or task, and the Waffenfarbe (Color trim that would denote what his job was) cannot be distinguished because it's not a colored photo, I'm at a loss.
If you have anything else from him it may help answer more specific questions.

Disregard my last two posts, Wikipedia reveals that the hat is likely a peaked cap (Schrimmütze). The wire that stiffened the top of the hat was often removed in the field, especially by tankers. The braid on his collar suggests he's an enlisted man of some kind due to its simplicity.

Members of Hindenburg's cabinet believed they could control Hitler while getting the support for the Nazi party (not at all a majority, but a decent percentage that mattered in post ww1 Germany's political scape).
Reichstag fire and Hitler removes freedoms as Chancellor, Hindenburg dies and he takes over. NO VOTING AT ALL.

OP here. Fell asleep. Thanks everyone for the information, much appreciated. To answer some questions asked of me: Proud or disappointed? Not disappointed, highly interested and perhaps with a little macabre/guilty "pride" at his history. Yeah he was pretty handsome, and I got all the traits (blonde hair, blue eyes, good physique, square jaw, high cheek bones, etc). I wouldn't exist today if it weren't for the war and them fleeing Germany after Oma witnessed her neighbor get blown up by a landmine on his property, so there's that.
