Hi /k/, what would be your choice for a first shotgun? My price range is around 300-400 (poorfag). I was deciding mainly between the Mossberg 590 or the Ithaca 37. Pros/cons of each? Thanks.

break action 12guage.

improvised loads and rifled inserts will come your way, but only if you post "get those waskly wabbits elmer".

mossberg 500

The ithacas are good guns but when they do jam your fucked. Plus all the ones in your price range are going to be kinda crappy.

Get the 590. There really are no cons to it.

If you want something that isn't shit but is hundreds less than the real thing, you need to look into the IAC Hawk 982.

It is running for 169-179.99 right now and it is basically a Chinese Remington 870 knockoff that has better parts than the actual authentic Remington 870.

>milled extractor vs. mold injected extractor
>all steel trigger guard vs. plastic trigger guard
>ghost ring sights vs. brass bead

It can take Remington 870 with the exception of Remington 870 barrels ( different lug design on barrel, but you can get a gunsmith to make a Remington barrel fit on your IAC Hawk )

My cousin, a couple buddies of mine and I all have it and I've put hundreds of rounds, birdshot, buck and slugs through it.

It is heavier than the Remington 870 because of it's all steel construction, but it is build like a tank and is genuinely one of the best shotgun deals on the internet.

I am seriously considering purchasing a few extra just to have reserves as they in my honest opinion are extremely reliable for what they are.

>It is heavier than the Remington 870 because of it's all steel construction
its actually not cause of the steel
well it is slightly heavier cause of the longer magtube and weight of the ghostrings but the real weight increase comes from the furniture
if you replace the stock and forend with rem parts you lose a noticeable amount of weight the plastic they used is thick as fuck

the rem stocks like 2 mm thick
the hawk stock is 1 cm thick

This seriously. The 500 is pretty much indestructible, plus they are so popular that they have a myriad of aftermarket parts for them.

If you can find an Ithaca that isn't beat to shit for $300-400, I'd say go for it. Also the Stevens 350 which is a Chinese clone of the Ithaca can be found for around $300. Both the Ithaca and 590 have
>dual extractors
>no annoying loading gate like the 870
>easily changed barrels
>can mount bayonets with the right hardware

Ithaca's pros:
>steel receiver
>lefty friendly downward ejection
>one opening for loading/ejecting = inherently stronger receiver
>sexy mag tube triangle nub thing
>slamfire on all pre 72 guns and post 72 police guns
>hipster bonuspoints
>derivative of a JMB design

Cons:
>smaller aftermarket support
>more complicated disassembly
>most have only 2 3/4 chambers
>one op bar (except on Stevens 350)
>bayonet mounting hardware is rare & expensive

Mossman pros:
>aluminum receiver is lighter than steel
>extensive aftermarket
>cheaper
>can be had as pistol grip only with a sub 18in barrel yet no tax stamp with the shockwave raptor grip
>two op bars
>bayonet mounting hardware is reasonably priced
>lefty friendly safety position on tang
>can be had in corrosion-resistant marine magnum flavor
>easily replaceable screwed-in ejector

Mossman cons:
>mag tube size not easily increased
>plastic safety and triggerguard except for 590a1
>rattling forearm doubles as tactical castanets

I have two Ithaca 37s. Personally I think they're great guns. Both of mine were made in the '40's and there is really no comparison between them and a
modern production gun like an 870 or 500. They're solid steel and wood with finishing that's help up over 60 years of hunting and use. The actions on them are the smoothest I've felt on a pump shotgun and the bonus of being able to slam fire the older ones is fun. If you can find a good deal on an older one and don't mine the lack of ability to tacticool them the way you can an 870 or 500 I'd say definitely give them a shot.

Remington Model 31

Probably below your price-range depending on the condition, and worth twice as much.

I learned to shoot with one and it's still one of my favorite shotguns to this day.

Find a used auto-5 or remington model 11

world's fastest long recoil action, fastest single action. Finest shotgun ever designed.
>>
What does /k/ think of 12" LOP stocks? I bought a hogue stock but I havent used it yet. How is the recoil when firing from a squared stance?
>>
>>29568343
This, and Model 11's are mostly inexpensive. You will see higher prices on odd-ball type calibers (like I saw a 16 gauge for $399 today) but at gun shows I have seen 12 gauge ones as low as $150-200. Good shotguns for the price, might have to fix 'em up a bit cosmetically if you're into that kind of thing but they're reliable as shit
