In the Canadian Infantry, it's pretty standard for a platoon to only be equipped with 2-3 C6s. Each section has 2 C9 gunners.
Most soldiers hate being assigned the GPMG after marching with it.

Generally, in the US and most western militaries the standard tends to be 1 light machinegun/automatic rifle per fireteam. That's 2-3 per squad, depending on how the squads are set up.
The M240 is an MMG/GPMG. For dismounted use, they are normally put into weapons teams for the platoon. That means 2-4 of these weapons per platoon.
The light machineguns move with squads and keep up with riflemen to provide more mobile beltfed firepower. The MMGs are heavier and slower, and generally not fired on the move- they provide a base of suppression fire to allow other parts of the platoon to move.
There are rumblings that the Russians are doing away with their squad automatic rifles and are putting their PKP and PKMs into the light machine gun role, despite those weapons commonly being considered GPMGs due to size and caliber. I do not know if this Russian experiment will work.
