Throwing lead out a steel pipe hasn't changed much in the last few centuries despite everything else that has advanced. Case in point: there are rebels in shitty African or southeast Asian countries that are still using guns made in the late 1800's right now in 2016. In 2025, chances are, nothing much has changed from a small arms perspective, except guns made mostly from extruded plastic will be the norm (think SCAR-H).
Big differences? More and smaller drones, even crazier electronic surveillance/counter-surveillance, far more sophisticated IEDs, new biological or chemical threats.

That seems to be the case with all the new gear the army is testing and issuing. Weight is becoming an issue so I expect a strong push to miniaturize and consolidate gadgets into one modular formfactor. Fucked if I know what that will look like though.

The rhino is a futuristic looking hand gun. The hammerli sp20 is another. Maybe a racegun...
The hk416 or the scar, kriss vector would be a good carbine.

Mercs and PMC's equipment will wholely depend on the contract.
For example, mercs running crowd control during the early days of libya were running around with pepper ball and bean bag guns while others covered them with 7.62 long guns. These mercs were mostly from other parts of Africa.
Higher tier mercs in advisor positions were issued weapons from the Libyan republican guard (F200s, well maintained Krinkovs/aks). These mercs were mainly slavs.
Now if you go to Bagram and climb up a guard tower you'll most likely find a PMC with a shitty M9 and XM177E2 with about 50,000 rounds through both with no optic.
Avenues for equipment are as follows.
1. Locally sourced weaponry through white/grey/black markets.
2. Issued by the client.
3. In rare cases weapons are imported by the PMC or smuggled by mercs into the area of operation.
FWIW, It's actually illegal for H&K to have their weapons be used by PMCs. The prolific use of H&K weaponry during the 2005ish era of PMC activity in Iraq and Afghanistan was primarily done through third parties (Grey market). This is still illegal for H&K and from what I understand has been curtailed heavily.

PMC's should have a bunch of bullpup meme guns or spacey SMGs, like Tavors, Aug A3s, F2000s, P90s, Scorpions, etc. Mercs should have AKs and ARs, I think the AK74 would fit well there.

It doesn't matter, a gun is a.gun. The first war on Mars will have muskets and machine guns.
Your characters should have whatever they can get. Avoid wheelguns unless your setting involves a ban on semiautos. Today, that's a Glock, or a polymer Sig.
Actually, fuck that. Give them an FN fiveseven, but (sub)compact and striker fired. That would be 10/10 only handgun ever needed.
You can make 5.7 suppressors much lighter and smaller, too.
