used GLAWK brand GLAWK ($400 for either a used subcompact or fullsize in 40) plus poverty tier AR build ($500) plus sling, flashlight, UTG rear sight and a few mags.
There, no stupid gimmicky shit, no poorly made discount firearms, no tactically outdated shotgun (inb4 muh birdshot, muh racking-the-side-scares-off-whatever, muh slug chest cavity) and I can CCW, defend my home, ride out the chimpouts, and the impending collapse of our society.

The only pistols under $500 worth a damn they I personally have experience with are any cheapie ruger in the p80-90 series as they are well made clubs. And the humble $200 Hi-Point, Had one in .45 for a couple years. It was a big massive single stack monster but it put .45s in tiny groups and felt like a .22lr due to its massive weight. Always went bang, never jammed and had a shitty little bent metal lever safety I hated. Would get one again in a hot second as a nightstand gun.
Now there are a lot of cheap milsurp pistols and even a bunch of Nagant revolvers floating around. Some like the Star Model B in 9mm are supposed to be passable.
