Where were you when the future of armor arrived?
>super light metal foam
>1 inch stops 7.62x31 AP round with 8mm of deformation on back
>relatively cheap to produce with industrial machinery
My body is ready /k/
Is yours?

7.62x63 is 30-06 for those of you accustomed to freedom units. This is some really interesting stuff if it pans out, I wonder if you could make some sort of suit with 100% coverage

Probably wouldn't be too hard to go full plate. At the least center mass+head are gonna be pretty much safe from anything smaller than .338 Lapua, since you know they'll have more than an inch worth of the stuff on.

what sort of trickery is this? Is the foam pressurized or something?
>>
>>29562075
Nah, it's only foam in the loosest sense. It's really like a matrix of metal in a particular configuration that mimics the natural structure of foam.

Probably very brittle. How does it deal with extreme temps?

The only issue with metal foam is that the energy is absorbed trough massive deformation, it means there is no such thing as a "multishot" plate. It works a lot like the deforming parts of a car during a crash.

But yeah, if it's light enough it could be very interesting.

I'd be curious to see what it would do behind hard armor on a tank for instance, because a lot of the shots you take are making the armor smile in return but a single "big" shot is fatal. With this foam it could prevent a one-shot kill from a big shell and give the tank crew enough time to respond/deploy smoke/flee

everyone's gonna look like camoflaged michelin man then

It's using the metal foam as an internal plate sandwiched between boron carbide and 7075 aluminum... boron carbide is already used for the level IV plates, and this is an inch thick, not to mention that they didn't compare the weight of this versus the standard esapi's.

Really well actually. Apparently super resistant to heat, more so than even kevlar

Damn, this looks rad as fuck

seems interesting in a more evolved solution to build light paradrop AFV's
Something like the Russian doctrine, but able to stand up to autocannon rounds, would be cool as hell.

Once people find a way to mass produce graphene then that will be revolutionary. Pic related it's graphene.
