He was USMA?
>>
>>29537324
When you graduate from somewhere prestigious, you get a ring. Knocking the ring on the table summons others who are equally elite to do the same. If you weren't part of the elite, you'd get noticed rather quickly.

No he was not overrated.

Kebab removal intensified exponentially when he took over the CIA.
>>
>>29537354
That's retarded.
>>
Pretty much every human is overrated.

Statues and busts are stone. Stories are words. People are flesh and blood.

The world likes to take famous people and build them up to tear them down.

It's a crime what we do to celebrities.

story behind this ? Sorry I'm not from the US.
>>
>>29541090
He was one of the top generals and then director of the CIA who had to step down because it was revealed that he was fucking a journalist during his time as a general which may have exposed her to highly classified information
>>
>>29537248

The fact that every organization/operation that he took over, managed, or was otherwise placed in charge of became more efficient and successful at their mission tells me he wasn't.

You think he caught it when he went to the CIA?
>>

It all makes sense now.

>Right place, right time, right uniform and you'll go far in the Army.
He was the living embodiment of that saying. He didn't create the Al Anbar Awakening, he just took advantage of it. But compared to how the war was handled up to that point, that made him a fucking military genius.

Thank you for asking this OP as it gives me a chance to talk about pic related, a 350+ page novel on Patraeus's role in directing The Surge. If you look at what he was able to in 2007 in terms of curtailing voilence in Iraq and defeating AQIA I would argue he has a better track record than any US general since the invasion of Afghanistan. He could have potentially been greater, even legendary surpassing the well known names of WW2, but he failed to use the political initiative that he gained to generate reconciliation between the various factions in Iraq. This is tragic because more effective strategy in 2008 may have altered the course of history enough to have prevented ISIS from steamrolling the ISF in 2014.
>>
>>29537248
Petraeus successfully navigated the political shitshow in Iraq to such an extent that by the time the US was about to withdraw the insurgency was underground.

Then Maliki had to ruin it all and cause even the Sunni allies of the surge to turn on him. Maliki and the US leaving Iraq was the catalyst for ISIS's explosive return.
>>
>>29541674
>surge was entirely funded and backed with bribe money
>surprised when people revert when the bribe money stops
>blames Maliki because somehow he was supposed to be bought and paid for

The catalyst for ISIS was and will always be the 2003 invasion.
