Not really, most of these people join of their own volition. What the YPG is really looking for are specialists like engineers and doctors. Manpower (counting women fighters) they've never really been up short compared to the other Syrian factions.

Which one? The YPG receive stuff across the Iraqi Syrian border pretty often as aid from the Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga, its also where most volunteers cross over into Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan). Getting shit across the Turkish border would be dicey considering there's basically full on war between the PKK and Turkey at the moment.

Well several Americans have gone thus far without ramifications, the Canuck had to talk to the police when he came back but when he told them he wasn't fighting for ISIS they let him go. So far it seems like if you go you'd be in the clear, but with the shifting alliances and favors in the war in Syria shit could potentially go bad.
