I've been told that the Wilton BASH hammer is actually pretty badass. Carry that and for range make some nice pipe-bombs. If I needed safe accurate range finding a decent crossbow shouldn't be impossible.

I'd rather parry blunt force like, baseball bats and batons with a buckler than a parrying dagger and I'd think that going up against another thrust oriented sword would be uncommon so a buckler would be more practical. They also make pretty good striking implements against unarmoured faces that get too close.
If I knew I'd be facing melee opponents though, I'd consider carrying a spear or a partizan, since that would put me at a massive range advantage. If I suspected that they'd have armour, I'd probably choose a pollaxe instead.

Good choices, spear will have to be carried in your hands and subsequently dropped if you want transition to sword though. I would also recommend a sword with more adequate hand protection if you're not wearing steel gauntlets.

My modern compound bow. It shoots a carbon shaft arrow with a gnarly 125gr broadhead at over 300fps and I'm accurate with it to 50 yards on deer. Probably 100 at least if all I needed to do was hit a man and didn't care about how they died.
