If they "stick him like a pig", that implies that they didn't shoot the conscript but rather impaled him with a bayonet. Which means that it didn't matter if their rifles worked or not. The M16 was both longer and lighter than the AKM which makes it better for using bayonets to their maximum effectiveness.
