hey /k/ is this a good deal for a 1911?

>>
This the 1911 general?

Anybody have experience with the SPS Pantera? Looking to get one in .40 as an entry-level 2011 Limited gun.
>>
It's a decent deal considering it comes with the light/case/good mags, but it's not exceptional.
>>
>>29516431
just interested. why would you get a 1911 in .40 when there is so many in .45 acp?
>>
>>29516408
All things considered it is fair to both buyer and seller.
>>
>>29516408

>buys $2000 1911

>puts $150 light on it

streamlights are totally legit, but surefires are definitely more durable. why cheap out on the light if you just bought one of the most gucci 1911's?
>>
>>29516457

For competition. Limited requires a .40 bullet to make Major.

i'm not saying they're unreliable once you get them tuned right. i'm saying they take a lot more work to keep running right. think of it as a classic car vs a modern honda civic.

i love 1911s. a 1911 was my first gun. a different 1911 is my favorite gun. but any new pistol doesn't need hand fitting, or somebody to tune the extractor, or a huge shit-flinging contest between Wilson, CMC, and Tripp Research to define who makes an acceptable 8 round mag.

Hilton Yam, a well-respected 1911 smith, active LEO, competition shooter, etc. has this to say about the 1911
http://www.10-8performance.com/pages/Choosing-a-1911-for-Duty-Use.html

it's a good gun. it just takes more dedication.

Ruger SR1911 Talo checks those boxes at an attractive price. At a higher price you can find NIB Sig and STIs that should fit the bill. Kimber looks like it would but they don't use Novak cuts.

I got a Ruger though, all American and all that, plus they just work. For the sub $1000 range I'd go Ruger or SA all day.

what's wrong with my 1911?
getting jams that look like this, usually the 3rd round. using a Wilson combat 8 round, but this similar one happened on the last round with an act mag.
the slide stop has been partially engaged, and this just makes no sense to me.
no, I don't ride the slide stop.
also, somehow while in use my Wilson mag got a little nick put in it on the outer case, where it swoops down to the slide stop. guessing somewhat related.
>>
>>29521216
What company manufactured your 1911? Also what ammo are you using? As in weight and brand. Wilson Combat makes good mags overall but can have a lemon like any other company.

Pretty much the same as a standard Government Model, just with the series 80 firing system. The Series 70 have an arguably better trigger, but it shouldn't be a noticeable difference unless you're trying to get trigger work done. For a pristine one for $450 though, it's a steal when you consider that it's around the price of a bare bones RIA or something.
>>
>>29521668
230 grain, round nose fmj, reloads from laxammo
is a rock island.

>>29521712
how does that explain the round being half out of the magazine? I think the round is contacting the slide stop when it's that far forward
>>
>>29521216
I see 2 different problems if this is exactly how it stopped.
1. The round has shifted forward uncontrolled. I would look at the magazine first.
2. The slide stop engaging during recoil. Bad detent spring. Bad detent. Bad slide stop. Bad technique. Loose round striking slide stop.

The magazine could be the culprit with both issues. So start with a new or known good mag.
Inspect the parts involved with this. Check the stop/detent interface. Is the detent putting solid pressure on the stop. Does the stop have a small bevel to help keep it in the lower position. With the slide off, look at the inside surface of the stop. Does it have brass marks on it? If so, the rounds are striking it.

If all else fails, have another experienced shooter watch you shoot, then have them try to duplicate the issue.

Sometimes it helps to use your left thumb to lock down your right thumb. Give it a try, it costs nothing.

Good luck

**** All advice is worth exactly what you paid for it ****

I used to have a gun like that. Loved it, but refused to carry it. I had to sell it.

>>
>>29526340
Not him but bad detent makes some sense, although it would stand to reason that your safety is very loose as well and doesn't have a positive click. Plus you could pull the slide back and see how easy it is to manipulate the slide stop. If it just flounders up and down and doesn't snap down, then it could be a bad spring. You may also want to check your grip though, make sure you aren't somehow pushing up on the slide stop (yes, I've seen it)

With a case being stupid to extract you could have a wimpy extractor. Also an (almost as) easy test:

>Field strip
>Stuff a round (spent case if you like, a live round if you're not a pussy) under the extractor
>Round should hold against the breechface
>Should be easy enough to get in there and hold in well enough to not fall out on it's own, but maybe with some violent shaking of the slide

If it falls out easily, or is hard to get in (less likely if it's the case here) then your extractor is too weak or strong, respectively. You *could* take it to a gunsmith, or you could remove the extractor (Google it, it's stupid-easy) and bend it then re-try the test. If you need to bend it just put the extractor in half-way and bend to the left to tighten or to the right to loosen (if looking from rear of slide; the ideal position to be in when a gun is drawn).

Good luck friend.

pic related is slide stop and little divot in mag. it looks tiny, but it's enough to make it drag when inserting or ejecting. I can feel it scrape.
put a round in and checked for contact between rounds and slide stop, and none visible, even when moving rounds up and down.
round sits well above top of slide stop when pushed forwards.
grip I use puts right thing actually almost on mag eject, so no where near slide stop.
slide stop isn't loose, shaking gun up down does not cause it to move, barrel link is no where near tight enough to cause any motion in slide stop. it will stay where I put it, it won't drop down on it's own either.

I haven't seen many old bears to compare mine to, but I think my hemi is a fine piece.

Fit and finish, while maybe isn't as pretty as a Wilson or nighthawk, is top notch.

What do you notice that is different about the newer ones?

I ordered a mono heavyweight on feb 2nd.

No front cocking serrations, blank slide, fixed sights, magwell. Going to be a long wait.

Pic is a similar one from Google.

Thanks, I appreciate the info.

I have no previous experience with 1911s, so this will be my first one.

They just feel all around chintzier, especially the fit in the hands, and the working of the slide and safety. Noticeably inferior to a Wilson or Brown.

Though bear in mind that I have a sub 7000 sn gun from Hillsdale, so I'm comparing to a fairly old gun from when the tooling was pretty much new.

has anyone looked at a polymer 1911 yet?
something about the glocks I've shot, yeah they're lighter, but all the weight beeing in the slide makes them move a lot more, you can tell when the slide locks back because you don't feel the weight snap back forward.
how are the polymer ones?
