I've no idea how wire and plate thickness gauges work, only the shotty gauges. But it's about 4mm forged from stock "skeleton" and 3mm thick plates riveted into it. Stupid thick. Half the thickness would suffice in most cases.

It's not really a protective outfit to begin with. Fencers sometimes wear a bit of tough canvas over our blade side. It's really insurance in case an epee breaks mid thrust. It's rare but people have been killed like that.

Nah, not really. As I said, I would've done it half as thick. Mah mastah on the smithy who knows jack shit about history and practical use of metal both made me do it. Broke the forged part of a spear in half in anger after he told me it is too small, (prolly about 10") so I went and forged a fucker nearly 30" long. NOT counting the shaft.
