I took a female friend shooting for the first time the other day. She did pretty well, and then near the end of our day I was showing her some empty shell casings of various sizes that we found on the ground.

>So, wait a second Anon. If this one is .45, why is this one called .380? Why don't they just call it .38?
>because .38 is a different cartridge
>OK, but if you can just call them whatever you want, then why do they use the numbers at all?

Well, /k/?
>>
Because that's what the Creator of the round wanted to call it
Because we don't use letters in measurement (suffix doesn't count)
>>
>>29512262
i do this with my guy friends
its more fun when roles are switched

also it is diameter of the bullet in inches or mm
>>
>>29512262
She's right it's stupid.

There are a few different actual barrel/chamber diameters, sometimes a few in the same category, but they basically break down to either .22 cal, .30 cal, .38 cal, .40 cal, .45 cal, or .50 cal and the number in either inches or mm is just part of the name.

There are some excdeptions, such as 6.8 spc which is like .28 cal and 6.5 which is .26 cal, those are relatively correct, but like .44 magnum is closer to .43
>>
Because the names help differentiate different rounds that might use the same bullet.

Think about how many rounds use the .224 or .308 projectiles. The caliber name helps in separating all the different case sizes.
>>
Because they're in reality different rounds and not all guns accept all food from the same group.
>>
>>29512262
caliber names are pretty arbitrary and a lot of the weird ones are just for the sake of differentiation. you just have to learn them.
>>
>>29512319
No actually, it very rarely is for some reason.
>>
>>29512262
The easiest explanation is to compare it to the model number and name of cars.

Sometimes they make sense, and tell you something about the size and capability, and sometimes they don't. You don't need to learn ALL of them, but you should know what you're using.

You know what might be easier for some people at least?
If ammunition all had a 2nd generic designation like in my cartridge collection instead of having so many similar names.
>handgun cartridges labeled like H-XXX
>rifle cartridges R-XXX
>rimfire RF-XXX

post a pic of this alleged semen demon
>>
>>29512798

Except that it doesn't matter to the cartridge whether it's used in a pistol or a rifle, and many are used in both.
>>
>>29513191
In most cases, it'd point to the right thing.
Nobody says you absolutely have to have a separate designation for pistol or rifle.
>>
>>29513222
>it'd point to the right thing.

That's not how life works, kiddo.

I vote that we abandon your shit idea because it's clearly shit.
>>
Ya, I think in this one case metric makes more sense, so 9mm luger is 9x19 380 would be like 9x17 although you'd still need to have designation for AI type rounds

The naming conventions have changed quite a bit already.

It used to be the diameter of the projectile followed by the number of grains of black powder (.45-70, for instance). The two rounds that break that convention are the .30-30 Winchester (which was one of the first to use smokeless powder) and .30-06 Springfield (which means .30 caliber round from 1906).

Old revolver rounds don't use the same diameter projectile as their name designates because they used to use heeled bullets (as seen in picture on the right). Modern bullets (as seen on the left) for those same rounds are thus slightly smaller in diameter.
>>
>>29514178

These days, most rounds are designated "Caliber x length of empty casing", like 9x19 or 5.56x45
>>
>>29512262
Because same diameter different case lengths. Just a shorthand way of keeping ammo types seperate?
>>
>>29512262
>Well, /k/?

Because names like "Automatic Colt Pistol", "Beowulf", and "African Eliminator" are just as hard to remember. Might as well be hard to remember and inform you how large the bullet is.
>>
>>29514500
>African Eliminator
Action Express. The /k/ meme isn't what "AE" stands for.

.38 Special and .44 Magnum are based on older cartridges that used a heel based bullet with the bullet slightly larger than the case itself. .44 American was adapted to create .44 Russian with the same case and a smaller bullet that was smaller than the case. .44 Russian was lengthened to .44 Special, which in turn was lengthened again to .44 Magnum.

The same process turned .38 Long Colt into .38 Special. The .38 Long Colt case was lengthened and a smaller .357 bullet was used. For whatever reason, when S&W lengthened .38 Special into .357 Magnum, they chose to give the new cartridge it's actual caliber in the name.

Pic is .45acp, .44 American and .44 Magnum.

The .38 cartridge isn't just a different cartridge....wait for it.....its a special cartridge.

It's actually the opposite of what you've said. Those are extremely easy to remember.
>>
>>29516690

There exists both .38 and .38 Special.
>>
>>29512262
.38 Special is a rimmed revolver cartridge.
.380 ACP is a rimless semi-auto round.

There are several more, so the names matter for distinction.

Fun fact: you can shoot .38 Short Colt, .38 Long Colt, .38 S&W Special, and .357 Magnum through .357 revolvers, but not .38 S&W.
