Before I get banned, I'm 20 and in college.

So, let's sum up the bizarre series of events. I work on campus, and we have a newsletter each month, with the employee of the month and a student spotlight. Student spotlight is pretty much participation award, and just goes through all the employees.

In mine, I stated that I may join the military after college, which seems increasingly likely.

Well, I didn't realize this, but anyone can sign up to get the newsletter, so my parents friend signed up. She saw it and told them I was on it, and is now sending it to them.

Anyways, for any of you that joined the military, how did it go over with your parents? I mean, I wanted to join in and become an officer, but odds are my GPA will keep me from doing that. So I'm probably going to just enlist in the Army to get that college loan repayment program, plus be able to serve. DESU though I don't want to be infantry because I don't want to possibly die. Yes maybe that makes me a pussy.
>>
Dude who the fuck cares are you not an adult?

How the fuck are you gonna function in the military?
>>
>>29507998
Naw it's not so much, that, I mean, I will do what I want to do. It's just, I wonder how other people told their parents and how they reacted. I love my parents a lot and want them to be happy.
>>
i joined the army and didn't tell my parents till the day I left for basic because of religion. turned out to be the best choice I ever made.
>>
>>29507998
>>29508025
But again, if I decide I want to join the military, I will do it and they won't stop me. It's just I wondered how anyone else explained their reasoning.

Also, is the only way to get a list of critical MOSs to ask a recruiter?

And what would you guys recommend, like honestly? Graduate college, get a normal job in IT and pay off my loans that way? Or join the Army for three years, pay them off that way, and then exit the Army and get a normal job?

My thing is, I don't want to forget what I learned at school for IT over the three years I'm in the Army, and then come out and be at a disadvantage. I would pick something IT related, but it says you have to choose from a critical MOS, and if one of those aren't IT then I'd be shit out of luck.
>>
>>29507980
you are your own person.

that's it. your parents don't and can't make these choices for you, and that means you shouldn't put too much stock into their reactions.

they can't be a part of that decision because they don't have any say what comes after you make it.

if you sign on for service, you're uncle sam's person for a while. even if you don't go combat arms you can still get killed or seriously injured in his employ. often by accident.

if it's a choice based purely on the gi bill, it may not be the best decision for you to make.

"Hey parents, my college plans didn't quite work out. I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life, I made a mistake in my major, I am not devoted to this life, and my grades aren't great. I'm not failing, I'll graduate, but I don't know what sort of job I'll be able to get, if any. Besides that, I wouldn't be happy in that job anyway. I am thinking about joining the military. It will give me a secure base of employment to plan out what I REALLY want to do with my life. Plus it will pay for my college loans, I made this bed, and I will pay for my mistakes. This might not be the route YOU had envisioned for me, but ive thought about this, this is right for me"

Then join the military you fucking alpha-omega omnipotent all creating all destroying cuck.

Doesn't matter. But

I was 17, told my dad and mom, both were hesitant. This was back in 2008 during the surge. Needed a waiver that they had to sign so I could ship out.

Dad and I go to recruiter. Dad is for it.

Mom was not.
Mom eventually caves, I get the signature.

Mom was dramatic about the whole thing, dad was proud.

Would have done it with or without their approval.

You should have zero issues here, especially if u choose a non combat MOS, it will be a cakewalk.
>>
>>29508079
BINGO THIS THIS THIS FUCKING THIS

Why has the military become a depository for all failed human beings
>>
>>29508079
Oh no, I'm going to graduate. I love my major (IT), though my grades aren't too great (2.6GPA)
>>29508077
It's not purely on the Loan Repayment Bill, but that plays a role. I wanted to be an officer, but my GPA isn't going to allow it. I want to serve my country, but desu I'm scared of dying, which is my only hesitation. Also the whole come out and forget everything I learned in school and be fucked.
>>
>>29508097
I have to choose a "critical" MOS if I want the loan repayment program, so I don't know if that will have IT related stuff in it. I mean, I would like to do like Cyber Network Defender, cryptologic network warfare specialist, etc.

Hopefully they don't ship me to like Seoul or something and I die in Nuclear hellfire.

Thanks
>>
pretty much confirms what i suspected to be true about most western militaries, they are just the havens for welfare queens who want an easy cushy job that grants them instant respect. soon women will be added to their ranks and it will be full blown cuckstorm. we used to be scared of the american military just 20 years ago, now not so much.

your poor people don't know it but the """"""men"""""" defending them have no national pride or love for their homeland, they just sign up for an easy pay check. when a real enemy fights you and the gonig gets tough who wants to bet half of these losers desert or end up either dead or mentally damage PTSD sufferers?
>>
>>29508356
I literally want to join the military because I want to serve my country. It has the added bonus of helping pay back my college loans.

So yeah.
>>
Young people today have a different relationship with their parents. That's why OP feels like he needs to explain it to them or justify it, whatever. That's also why they, in return, feel like they're entitled at all to an opinion on what OP does with his life.

OP take the advice of the posters in this thread in a positive manner. It really is your life to lead. You don't need to explain anything. If they have a problem with it, at most you are obligated to listen to their concerns (because they're you're parents) and take those concerns into consideration. If after doing so, you still want to join: done deal.

Live your life. You will need to eventually anyway. They will need to get over it eventually anyway as well.

Also there's a specific military enlistment thread that you might want to make use of.

>I'm scared of dying
don't get a military job where you get shot at
it's that fucking simple
for every front line soldiers there's a shitload of guys behind him getting him the shit he needs so the only thing he needs to know how to do is smash things dead. that's one of the biggest mistakes people make. they think all soldiers are going to be shooting.
>>
>>29508379
>I literally want to join the military because I want to serve my country

the sad thing is in you're stupid little head you might actually believe this. you already admited your scared to die for your country no need to backpedal
>>
>>29507980

Mom supported it, my dad didn't. Not a single fuck given. You sound like a faggot for feeling you need your parents approval, cut the cord already, you stupid cuck.

>It's just I wondered how anyone else explained their reasoning.
I wanted to do it. I was an adult, I didn't need to justify anything to my parents.

>join the Army for three years
There are no 3 year contracts in the Army. You're looking at a minimum of 4 years active or 6 years Reserve/National Guard.
>>
>>29508479
I'm afraid to die because I have a self preservation instinct, why the fuck would I not be afraid to die. Dying is literally the last thing I want to happen to me.

No, I'd probably rather not die for my country. On top of that, I could BETTER serve my country in a role like IT than I could getting shot at most likely.
>>
>>29507980
It was shortly after 9/11 so they were as cool with it as any parents could be about sending their son of to fight and possibly die in a war.

It's a shame that you're signing up at the worst possible time. I went on to stay in for 10 years. I left in the middle of Obama's first term. I got out for a reason.

If your GPA is as bad as you're making it out to be you can still be a 19A. Judging by all of the armor officers that I ran into over the years it is apparently a job that requires 0 intelligence.
>>
>>29508071

sounds like you should join the Guard or Reserves.

my parents weren't thrilled, but they got over it. i'm glad i joined.
>>
>>29507980
>DESU though I don't want to be infantry because I don't want to possibly die. Yes maybe that makes me a pussy.
it's not all that bad, it's not going 0311.
first things first, what do you like to do?
cause essentially, once you sign that contract, you can't go back.
so determine what you like to do, because doing something that you hate for 4, or god help you, 8 years, is gonna fucking suck.
going officer is pretty shitty anyway.
as for your parents - I don't know if I can help you, I'm kind of a "rip the bandaid off" person.
>>
how to be stuck in a dangerous mos:
be a retard or choose to enlist in it

now, even if you have a 2.6 gpa, you're not that stupid to be stuck with infantry as your only job. hell, even if you were that dumb there's plenty of jobs like cook where you won't get shot at

I went to Navy OCS 2 years after graduating college. I was working at a grocery store before. My parents were glad to get me out of the house.

F@m, Sooner or later You WILL die. The faster you accept this, the better the rest of your life will be.

>I want to serve my country.

I'm glad you're patriotic but, don't let it show to much. The patriotic guys always get the most shit handed to them

>>

Im in the NUPOC program (Navy nulcear officer), and when I told my parents I got in my dad was very proud of me (He was an enlisted nuke), but my mom was not. I think Its a mother thing, where they dont want to imagine there little baby getting screamed at and degraded during ocs/bootcamp.

The country you want to serve doesn't exist. It's just a pile of corporate interests.
>>
>>29508097
>especially if u choose a non combat MOS, it will be a cakewalk.
You have a real chance to see fire, unless you go something like "teacher".

"Non-combat" and "POG" are just memes posted by a minority of bitter infantrymen.
