I'm getting an M1 Garand for my 19th birthday. What are some important things to know about quality, upkeep, mods, etc. Anything helps, I'm a gun newfag

Only mod I would make is to invest in a ported or adjustable gas plug so you can shoot modern 30-06 without worry.

Get a tub of Mobil 1 synthetic grease. It's great stuff and will last a lifetime.
Look into a reloading setup as well. I can reload Garand safe .30-06 loads using Hornady 168gr match bullets, 47gr IMR 4895 and CCI large rifle primers for .30 apiece.

A few things you should know, Unless you get the GarandGear Gas regulator you are stuck with M2 Ball or Older commercial ammo. You might also want to stay away from Steel case stuff as well. Not because it can damage the rifle but (at least with my M1) it wont like to feed. If you want good ammo at a cheap price, PPU is your best bet
