The Second USSR developed laser rounds instead of actual laser weapons. Go look for some cheap spam cans of 7.62x54r. You have to buy raw materials to recharge the batteries, but it works just as well as any other laser weapon.

If you wanted a new weapon I'd recommend a surplus second wave soviet Kalishnakov. The open front can be used to easily fit aftermarket parts like beam splitters or focusing lenses.

Upgrade the reactor for sure, from there you can move onto better shields and thrusters. When used correctly, you shouldn't need to go to far into all guns when you can just out manoeuvre/tank a few hits then hit their bridge/engines.
Also, should the universe look upon you kindly, try and work up to getting an Anaconda (Gotta aspire to something)
