So i have a mosin Nagant 91/30, and the finish was just shit, and I stripped it and cleaned it, and degreased it and a million other things until the wood is actually new and nice again, nothing caustic, no bleach, but now that ive gotten this far, I cant decide on a finish. Even right now, I could shellac over it and make it look factory new, (Professional woodworker here btw) And itd look amazing, but the wood is so nice im inclined to just leave it clean and new, or my buddy thinks torching the woodgrain for a zebra effect would look amazing, and Im just a fucker and cant decide.

Before/after, current pics to come.

what should I do /k/? any other cool options?

I dont give a flying fuck if you hate mosins or if you think im a retard for fucking with a 'historical rifle' or some other shit, really just looking for options for a nice finish.

Personally, I'd sand it and stain it, but that's just me. Probably go with a dark walnut or lighter ebony stain and then tru-oil it and then wax it.

Just my take on it.

My bud was thinking of doing something liek this to the wood grain, but I dont know if itd look good
>>
>>29494936
I got that same advice from my local woodworking shop, i just dont know which stain to use, there was a cool ebony one that looked really cool, but making the whole BW almost seems childish

Looks pretty nice

>>29494979
I had really good luck with doing a couple coats of walnut stain and then a couple coats of an ebony stain on my mossberg stock and forend. It came out well in my opinion.

Then I can't remember how many coats of tru-oil I used. Enough times after taking 00 steel wool and polishing it with a rag that I was happy with it and then I just waxed it. Hasn't needed any touching up in over a year now though I'll probably throw another coat of wax on it in the near future.
>>
>>29495079
THat looks really cool, no matter what I was gonna probs throw a layer of lacquer over it so i dont have to worry about maintenance with teh wood, the old shellac was chipping off in my hands, that was the motivation for all this. What kind of wood is that, do you know?
>>
>>29494831
I have done some work on milsurp rifles. I have found once I have bare wood, linseed oil works nice (and it was used for years by many a country). It just takes a lot and a bunch of time.

>>

I'm pretty sure it's walnut but I could be wrong. The wood was in pretty rough shape when it arrived.
>>
>>29494831
Why do people buy collectables and proceed to ruin their collector's value?

Go to any gunshow and there will be tables full of refinished milsurps that no one wants. No one wants your bubba'd shit.
>>
>>29495651

>>

See birch takes stain really bad, it's naturally oily, but there's treatments and stuff for it, but what you did nice ready nice I might try that

>it's my gun not to sell it faggot.
That's what they all say.
>it's muh gun
>I'm not gonna sell it ever!
And yet, they all end up on some dealer's table and he'll be lucky to sell that steamy turd you made 5 years from now. Just like every other idiot who can't appreciate what he has, nor care to, he'll never be satisfied and will be indefinitely disappointed with his "work."

This is also how these multi-thousand dollar guns end up being ruined. Ignorance is bliss.

Yeah just because I could package my turd and sell it as a "historic collectors turd" and sell it for 300 don't make it a collectors item
>>
>>29495935
>>29495971
They doubled in value in the last 2 years. That says a lot.

And again, ignorance is bliss. You idiots chop up non-refurbs the same as the common refurbs.
>>
>>29495878
That's actually really nice anon, was yours grungy after you stripped the shellac, mine was pretty bad and it took a while to clean
>>

>>
>>29496015
Doubled in value, go fuck yourself, 150 to 225 with 100rounds, and accessories is hardly anything. If your so butthurt about it go buy your own you pussy.

It's my gun and I'll do what I like, go cry about lost historic value in your mom's basement, there's literally millions more.

If you have a Mosin I suggest you use the bolt handle as a prostate massager to relieve some of the immense butthurt you have.
>>

The retards are the ones buying collector pieces to just ruin it's collector's value.

No, there's not. Ignorance is bliss.

And what is so "fucked up" about the wood in Mosin stocks?

These guns were also less than $80 5 years ago.
>>
>>29496150
The wood is usually great, but he said the wood on his was fucked up. When I got my first one 7 years ago from Gander Mountain it was $120 for a 91/30

I built an AK a few years ago, it started out as a 1978 Romanian G kit. After building it, spraying it with GunKote, and baking it- I started on the stock.

I stripped the stock then sanded the shit out of it. I stained it with a mixture of RIT dye to get the color I wanted. I cut the RIT with rubbing alcohol when I applied it. After a bunch of coats of dye, then washing it off and reapplying, I had it about where I wanted. I sealed it with gloss Minwax Wipe On Poly. I've used this poly on a couple stocks and it always comes out very well. Apply it in MANY thin coats, then wet sand it after it's dried overnight.

That's the key word. There's not even half of that number left in the entire world. Not that you truly care, since you're doing everything you can to justify your retarded actions. Much like your retarded grandfather did when he hacked up a Krag,, a Mauser an Enfield, or a Springfield. There's always millions more after all!
>>
>>29496218
Go suck a dick history is nothing if not appreciated.
>>
>>29496249
My grandfather used a Mosin you twat, I bet you think every native American arrowhead is sacred too you faggot
>>
>>29496218
Shooting them will wear out the barrel. Taking them to the range might get them wet if it rains, and will cause rust. The importer already ruined it by putting their mark on the receiver. We should just leave these guns in our safe and never touch them or change anything about them so that we dont disturb history.
>>
>>29496244
What kind of stain did you use?
>>
>>29496310
It was some combination of Minwax stains; might have been Early American, Cherry, and/or Red Mahogany.
>>
>>29496310
Not him, but I think minwax red sedona is really close to the original.
>>
>>29496249
It's not a goddam national heritage item, every country that finds yet another cache of them sells them off cheap as dirt, and they are still finding more, the price only went up from import bans, as in we have to many of them in the U.S it costs more to bring them in and seek them as opposed to American made guns, you tard, basic economics.
>>
OP here sorry everyone about the historical faggotry in the thread, trying to stay on topic.
>>
>>29496378
>and they are still finding more
Imports have trickled lately.
>the price only went up from import bans
There is no import bans on Mosins. The price is going up because the Ukrainians and Russians aren't selling them as cheaply as before and there aren't as plentiful in number now. They're also destroying a lot too.
>basic economics.
You're the one that can't understand finite supplies.
