The stock sights are imperfect but sturdy. The trigger is actually pretty decent. While long, it's also quite smooth and reasonable weight. As for the bolt, try cycling it with your off hand. It's a very different breed of rifle.

Or they shoot milsurp for the fun of it and have more modern guns for when they want other sights. Most milsurp was designed and produced in a time long before optics were common, affordable, accurate, and robust.
Also, most rifles from the 1700s were without adjustable sights. Most military rifles of WW2 and earlier had sights from 19th century designs.
