>Go to gun store to get nugget
>All of them are $250 because some guy sold his collection and couldn't be assed to price them differently, some better than others
>Pick one that doesn't look too much like shit
>Salesman said I picked a good one, 1944, all matching, relatively good condition.
>Have to wait 30 days because Cuckafornia
>Go in today to look at other guns
>Guy flags me down, shows me the nugget I bought
>Shows me the inside of the receiver, where there's two holes that have clearly been filled in.
>Nugget was refurbished after the war
>Despite being all matching, the gun originally had a different, bent bolt.
>My nugget was a sniper nugget
>MFW

What should I do /k/? Use it as is and hope it's still accurate? Try to bore the screws out and mount a scope? Where would I even get an authentic scope for the thing? Would I risk damaging it? Do I need a different bolt?

I'd really like to use a scope with it, but at the same time I'm afraid I might fuck it up and bubba a small piece of history.
>>

Personally I think you should leave it as it. But, if you want a scope die recommend the scout set up that you punch out the rear sights and add a pic rail. Or, you could get a qualified gunsmith to mount one of the proper mosin scopes that you can get from kalinka optics or ebay
>>
wait what the fuck. California is only a 10 day waiting period
>>
>>29492514
Stop being a bitch
>>
>>29492529
Some special rule about "consignment" guns. I gotta wait 20 days before I can wait 10 days.

>>29492518
I've heard this too. I think PU scopes are sexy, but a scout scope wouldn't require me to change the rifle in any way, so it's collector's worth (which might actually be slightly more than what I paid in a few years) won't be damaged.
>>
>>29492445
Former sniper nuggets are not uncommon.
They're just as legit as any refurbished nugget, but they don't go for a penny more.

Don't try to fuck with it and retap the screwholes or any of that shit, it's not worth it.

The gun's been rebarreled anyway during the refurb, so it no longer has anything to do with the sniper rifle it used to be.
>>
>>29492606
If it's re-barreled, re-bolted and re-stocked (there's no scope cut-out, it seems) then how is it all matching numbers? Did they make all new parts just to toss the old sniper ones?

usually they ground off the old serials, and electropenicled new ones on. technically, my 1942 Izhevsk arsenal refurb is all matching, but one barrel band is a tula, and the other is an Izhevsk.

ex-snipers are a nice curiosity, and will fetch a slightly higher price than your average 91/30, but retapping it is a gunsmith job. id leave it unfucked, and just pay out the ass for a real PU mosin.

either way, congrats on your new nugget

Ex sniper mosins don't really command an additional value. It's neat but nothing special. The PUd mosins where zeroed at the factory. If you throw a pu scope on it your windage would be way off.

even if it may have been a sniper, it´s still way to much for a simple refurb

it's not 30 days, it's 10. I just started my 10 day wait for my new handgun yesterday.

Don't let it happen to your state.

It's some special rule regarding the transfer of these guns. Everything has to go through an FFL here, and for some reason that means that a private party transfer takes longer.

Not something you can't fix with a file or shims - that's how it was done at the factory as well. It took a few range trips to get mine zeroed after I put it together.

Ex-snipers are maybe worth 5-10 more dollars than a run of the mill 91/30. It's basically Ex-Dragoon status.

Definitely not worth 250, but you live in California so guns are going to command a higher price regardless.

Now, if you had found anything that wasn't a Soviet M91/30 configuration rifle, you'd have at least made a decent profit/value. A soviet M44 goes for about that price.
>>
>>29492680
They force-match the serials during the refurb. They remove the old serials and stamp new ones in.

>Higher price in CA

You have no idea. It easily adds 50-75$ to the pricetag of every gun sold here, plus another $47 in taxes with each purchase.

My only other options for milsurp were $50-$150 more expensive and in much worse condition. The employee that sold me the nugget bought one for himself, and another customer was amazed they had them at all, because CA is just that gun-deprived.

Buying new is still theoretically a bit better because you don't have people trying to recoup the taxes they paid on it when they bought it by tacking it to the price, but you still often need a special snowflake California version of the gun which, of course, costs even more on top of the "fuck you this is CA" markup.

>>

Electropenciled parts are replacement parts. Parts still usable or in good condition were not replaced during the arsenal refurb (hence why many have shot out barrels or pitted receivers/bolts).

Electropencil was used for replacement and force-matched parts.
>>
>>29493998

Only on replacement parts. Many times you'll find rifles with a matching stamped bolt and receiver but pencilled stock and magazine, or some other mix.

They did not grind off and replace serials unless they were replacement parts not original to the rifle.

>>
>>29498026
They didn't just electropencil replacement parts, they ground off old serial numbers and stamped new ones too.

Easiest way is to check for cyrillic letters on all parts.
If the parts (bolt, buttplate, etc.) have ONLY numbers, that means the old serial numbers were ground off and new ones were stamped in to force match the parts.

Original serial numbers all had cyrillic letters, on all parts.
With a typical refurbished nugget, only the barrel shank will still have those cyrillic letters in the serial number.

>30 days
You do realize it's only 10 days.
>>
>>29500575
Two things.

1) It's easy to say you'll never sell your guns, but I imagine you're 25 or younger. Which means you probably have around 50 years more of your life to live. So if you can see so far into the future that you can say with absolute certainty that you'll never want or need to sell your guns, why don't you look a little harder and tell me Tomorrow's PowerBall numbers.

And 2) Even if somehow you never ever have to sell your guns, they're still removed from the pool of collectable rifles by you fucking with them. This raises the price of all the other non-shitted up ones, and makes it harder for collectors to find. Not to mention that you're fucking with history. You wouldn't try to change the color scheme on a fucking Van Gogh would you? Then don't do unnecessary shit to milsurp rifles.
>>
>>29500728
A milsurp isn't a goddam van Gogh, go jerk off to your pristine never fired hunk of wood and metal.
The only value anything has its what your put to it retard, what anyone does with anything isn't your business, and if it was it's just a wood and steel, a tool, something to shoot for fun or defense. That's it.
>>
>>29500728
Your idiotic fetishization if milsurps is not only retarded, it's impractical, if everyone thought like you noone would ever shoot, or make anything their own in any way ever. The world isn't a museum faggot.

At what point ever did I say that I bubba any of my guns. Anyway, I don't have some fucking personal responsibility to other "collectors" that I not only never bugger with my guns, but that I must also be ready to sell some, because I apparently lack the foresight in saying I want to keep them.

Go hero yourself, faget.
