Would an automatic .308 have any legitimate use or is full auto just a meme? I feel like it could be used as an effective deployable SAW but my friend is telling me its unrealistic and uncontrollable.

The autorifleman holds the majority of the squad's firepower. In every way other than carrying capacity, 7.62 is better than 5.56 for a LMG. Granted, capacity is a huge deal for LMGs.

Pretty much this. You can always get drums too, but in a practical sense this gives you the same capabilities of the BAR. Auto gives you versatility in a .308.

haven't shot a FAL in F/A, but I have shot a G3 in F/A a few times. It's completely useless other than for suppressing fire and POSSIBLE room clearing and that's only for short bursts.
Otherwise, in F/A, .308 is really only good in a GPMG.
