how important is food distribution in the modern battlefield? Couldn't we just have our soldiers source their food locally or scavenge it off the corpses of the enemy?
>>
>>29484141
Why not just have them eat the dead? Food supply is taken care of and so is corpse disposal.
>>
>>29484141
>scavenge it off the corpses of the enemy
Have you ever actually been outside?
>>
>>29484141
No

Foraging or other means of supplying off the local economy is stupid. It is a good way of getting all your soldiers sick or starving because you there is nothing to eat in the war zone.

Soviets tried supply locally in Afghanistan. It went horribly.

chow is the number 1 factor in troop morale. Hot chow>mre>scrounging any day of the week.
>>
>>29484175
don't they drop what they're carrying on death? they should have some food on them
>>
>>29484141
Yes army did exactly what you are saying for a long time and still do. However you can only scavenge so much so that limits the size of army or time it's able to operate in a given area. Modern supply systems is what ultimately give rise to modern army like the union army or the German army in. Ww1
>>
>>29484141
It's almost like you've never been in the military... oh, that's right. This is /k/.
>>
>>29484141
How important is fuel to an engine? Or basic maintenance? Nevermind the fact that it's the single most consistent day-to-day morale booster. It's the source of all human function. A properly fed army will outperform one that is not in every single regard.

"An army marches on it's stomach" Neoplean

"Deny your enemy that which he desires"
Sun Tzu

So, let's deny ourselves the most important resource that a standing force needs other than armament and allow the potential poisoning or denial of said resource from the enemy.... sounds smart.

An army marches on their feet I thought?

High and mighty words to come from a guy that didn't practice that at all. Foraging and stealing from locals was the norm in Napoleon's army.
>>
>>29484417
yes but to be fair they hadn't invented food storage yet
>>
Grassfed goat kebabs with some afghan tea is way better than aramark tier cafeteria food. I guess the locals would not be too happy with their livestock disappearing, but whatever, they can deal.
>>
>>29484417
>Foraging and stealing from locals was the norm in Napoleon's army.
That has kind of the standard for all armies since the dawn of warfare. It's only thanks to airplanes that this isn't how wars are still regularly fought.
>>
>>29484444
The French invented canning during the Napoleonic Wars actually. The process wasn't fast enough at the time for it to much matter though.
>>
>>29484736
yes, that's what i meant

they didnt invent canning until napoleon put out a huge contract for a way to preserve food

by the time they figured it out the russians had already mauled him
>>
>>29484141

About as important as it is everywhere else.

Which is to say really, really fucking important.
>>
>>29484141

Source locally and scavenge was a Napoleonic war idea that had worked with smaller armies in rural settings. Its also one of the main reasons the Japenese were extra hated was due to them trying to use this doctrine in a modern war setting. They were basically forced to raid foodstuffs from local people and they weren't exactly the nicest bunch.
>>
>>29484141
>or scavenge it off the corpses of the enemy?
What if they have the same idea? Now you both have no food.
What if you don't see the enemy for three days? Wars over, you lose.
>>
>>29484214
The enemy will just weaponize this
> enemey relies on our food supply
> "No one carry any food!"
> We all die
>>

>How important is fuel to an engine?
I suppose you could just pull up to the local gas station and ask the attendant to fill your tank up.

Scavenging is a horrible idea for all the reasons listed.

Sourcing locally isn't near as bad, but most of the world doesn't produce a large food surplus. You throw hundreds on thousands of new people into a region without outside food and SOMEBODY is gonna be starving. Wars aren't typically fought in major food producing regions in the first place and combat tends to disrupt local production.

Even if there is enough you have food safety concerns. Westerners tend to take food safety for granted. It may not even be readily apparent that there's an issue. Locals can drink water in Mexico no people. Gringos on the other hand . . .

And even if that's solved your troops may not like what's available locally leading to morale issues. Not everyone likes weird ethnic shit and even those that do usually don't like it every single day. People tend to prefer the food they grew up on.
>>
>>29484923
Better yet, just poison the food.
>>
Japan tried to do that in WWII,the result was everybody getting really hungry.
There's also the chance of the enemy using a scorched earth tactic and your army starving in the process.

That gas station had to be put there first amigo, and then has to be continually supplied, maintained and manned. Do you want to gamble on someone else already having done/doing that for you when you go into a combat zone?
>>
>>29484141
It is crucial to be able to distribute food on the regular. Food is what fuels an army literally and from a morale perspective a starving soldier is less likely to kill for the country denying it food than the sated soldier that was fed by his country.
>>
>>29484141
"Hi, excuse me, yeah- I know you all think that we're imperialist child fuckers that are constantly drone striking you and your families so a few old white men in our country make slightly more money- but could you make us some food? And maybe another dish as well for the vegans among us?"
>>
>>29484456
Yeah they'll deal with it by joining ISIS.
>>
>>29484417
Foraging was the norm everywhere. Napoleon was responsible for the invention of canned food, because he was a fucking pro and knew that logistics was what won wars.
